Track 1: Hello and welcome to Left of the Projector. I'm your host, Evan,

Speaker:

Track 1: back in with another film discussion from the left.

Speaker:

Track 1: This week on the show, we are getting back into the films of Paul Thomas Anderson

Speaker:

Track 1: with his 2007 masterpiece, There Will Be Blood. And coincidentally,

Speaker:

Track 1: this is the same weekend as his new film, One Battle After Another, was released.

Speaker:

Track 1: And I saw it. You can stay tuned in the near future for a...

Speaker:

Track 1: Well, it already will be out when you listen to this. You can go back and listen

Speaker:

Track 1: to my mini-review on One Battle After Another.

Speaker:

Track 1: But this film we're discussing, There Will Be Blood, depicts Daniel Day-Lewis

Speaker:

Track 1: as Daniel Plainview, a silver miner turned oil man on his journey to do whatever

Speaker:

Track 1: it takes to strike it big.

Speaker:

Track 1: This film is loosely based on the novel Oil by Upton Sinclair.

Speaker:

Track 1: It went on to win Daniel Day-Lewis the Oscar for Best Actor and Robert Ellsworth

Speaker:

Track 1: the Best Cinematography Award.

Speaker:

Track 1: With me to discuss this film are friends of the show and hosts of Bring Out

Speaker:

Track 1: Your Dead podcast. I have Chris and Griff. Thank you for being here today.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: No worries nice to be here again hello evan hello hello we.

Speaker:

Track 1: I was just thinking back to all the movies we threw around i feel like this

Speaker:

Track 1: was one of the original ones we maybe have talked about even before some of

Speaker:

Track 1: the other ones and so here we are we're doing there will be blood because.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I think it was just it was it's just it's it's this is a bit of an intimidating one to be honest,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i think the first one we did was um children of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: men children of men that was a no-brainer but ever

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: since then knocking around yeah has been

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: there will be blood and i know like you said you sent me

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: yesterday while we were messaging like there's so many threads to

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: go over me and chris have been sitting in chris's living

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: room for the last hour and a half talking about the film like what we think

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: about it we both have not like completely different but very different focuses

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: on what we think it's about and i feel like we're going to spend another two

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: hours talking about it now i wish we recorded that conversation yeah it was flowing yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: That could have that yeah you have you have like that's the bonus that's the bonus episode right.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah the side uh.

Speaker:

Track 1: The side talk but no but you are like it is an intimidating film i mean i think

Speaker:

Track 1: in general so many of paul thomas anderson's films especially the ones later

Speaker:

Track 1: with you know daniel de lewis are just um just like they're long,

Speaker:

Track 1: but they're just extremely rich in content, in whatever he wanted to kind of fit in there.

Speaker:

Track 1: But before we talk about this movie, I'm curious, other than this, do you have a favorite of,

Speaker:

Track 1: paul thomas anderson you could say this one but.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Well well first of all can you read them out i.

Speaker:

Track 1: Will read his his uh his filmography so he had heart eight boogie nights magnolia

Speaker:

Track 1: punch truck love the aforementioned there will be blood the master inherent

Speaker:

Track 1: vice phantom thread licorice pizza and then of course the one that just came out this week.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I haven't seen any of those movies you've

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: seen boogie nights i even i have a memory of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: boogie nights i mean i would say for me like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this film has kind of a special place in sort

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of my my memory and my heart because this would

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: have come out when i was 2006 right yeah 2007 2007

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: so this came out when i was 14 or 15 and that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: was right at the point that i was starting to understand that like film is

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: more than just entertainment it is like an art form and for

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: me this film is if not the first one

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of the first films that i watched i was like oh like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that's what film can be that's like that's what a masterpiece

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of cinema looks like and you know since then i've watched boogie nights i've

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: watched the master i've not watched everything but like i think for me this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this film has a special place in my heart as a film that kind of introduced

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: me to the idea of cinema i was i was telling griff actually because we were

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: talking about this um mine is much more psychotic.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Um because for me it it like this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this movie means a lot to me like that the like when

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i watched this movie first i remember loving it and then i watched it subsequent

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: times but i was telling griff um a couple of years ago i i what's the name of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: when you do a wedding you officiated i officiated my brother's wedding and i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: think on the plane on the way over there i I watched it and I was so,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: so captivated by the drama of it all.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: That is also the perfect way to watch a cinema masterpiece on a tiny screen.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And I was like that CC plane view right there. Daniel plane view, Daniel Day Lewis.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: That is the character I want to bring across at this wedding.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Like that's the intensity levels and the conviction I want.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah. And then, and then subsequently I'm on my first date with my girlfriend.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Um it was a couple of weeks after the wedding and i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: was introducing myself and i said oh i just came back from a wedding i was officiating

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: trying to sound cool and i was like and i acted like acted like daniel plainview

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the whole time and amazingly i got a second date i got more than i got more

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: than a second date we just bought a couch together more days than daniel plainview got more dates,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: anyway i think the long roundabout way to answer your question is i think our

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: favorite one is this Yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: That was kind of it's kind of like a trap question. I mean, for me,

Speaker:

Track 1: also, this was the first of his films that I saw. I don't remember seeing Boogie

Speaker:

Track 1: Nights when it came out. I was really young.

Speaker:

Track 1: And I don't really have much memory of it. But I do remember seeing There Will

Speaker:

Track 1: Be Blood in the theater and thinking the same thing you said,

Speaker:

Track 1: Griff, is like, this is...

Speaker:

Track 1: Cinema this is just and you look at daniel day lewis and you just think how

Speaker:

Track 1: can you be this good of an actor.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It's insane like that's we'll get to it later obviously because it's quite late

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: in the film but like the baptism scene where he's like physically doing basically

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: nothing he's just kneeling down but the way his face is just moving he's like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: doing so much just with his face it's incredible it's like.

Speaker:

Track 1: So to get into the film and maybe this is just like a good just a good note

Speaker:

Track 1: is that he and Paul Thomas Anderson were kind of preparing for the film kind

Speaker:

Track 1: of simultaneously. He asked Daniel Day-Lewis if he would be in the film and he said yes.

Speaker:

Track 1: And he basically had said though that if he had said no, he would not have made

Speaker:

Track 1: the film. Like he wanted Daniel Day-Lewis for the role. And he spent three years preparing.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Who else could you imagine? It couldn't be anyone else.

Speaker:

Track 1: No.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It couldn't. Yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: This film is nothing without...

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Tom Cruise. To be fair, Paul Thomas Anderson did get a good performance out

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of Tom Cruise. he did that's.

Speaker:

Track 1: Like actually probably one of his best performances.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Maybe yeah yeah that's.

Speaker:

Track 1: I mean that's a testament to paul thomas henderson also adam sandler's performance in.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Punch drug love.

Speaker:

Track 1: But i mean just like the preparation that went into this

Speaker:

Track 1: film is kind of legendary and that actually

Speaker:

Track 1: like leads me to one of the things and maybe you both were thinking about

Speaker:

Track 1: this in your conversation is what at the heart of

Speaker:

Track 1: the film like do you see as sort of the the core crux of the film it's not just

Speaker:

Track 1: you know this capitalist wannabe capitalist who wants to be rich i mean that's

Speaker:

Track 1: at the heart of it what the plot is you know he does whatever takes a step on

Speaker:

Track 1: anyone he'll but like what do you feel like at the center of it kind of makes the film.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: So again me me and chris have have two not

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: wildly different but quite different takes for me i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: think i see this as like a parable of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the making of the united states like this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is a story about what america is and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: how it came to be right it's and and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it's it's specifically focused new capitalism is a huge part

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of it but it's like this is what modern america how modern america

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: became modern america is how i would view it i think

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i think well like yeah geez like you're

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: throwing out like the deepest quest the deepest question like straight off the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: bat so yeah i was saying i was saying to griffith like i think to say like oh

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this isn't just a movie about capitalism versus religion is to undersell both

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of those topics at war with each other. Yeah.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: This is about that. Not only, not solely, I have lots of, we both have lots

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of differing, like, top...

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Viewpoints on it but it is that sort of how do i what what's the first way i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: want to say this this is the death of an old an old system an old structure

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of power and the birth of a new one literally.

Speaker:

Track 1: Because the opening scene is of daniel day lewis daniel plainsbu in a silver mine like.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Coming up.

Speaker:

Track 1: From the earth i think you were talking about this griffiths.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah kind.

Speaker:

Track 1: Of like this moment of of like birth or rebirth you could say like rebirth of

Speaker:

Track 1: him rebirth of the united states rebirth of capitalism this new system it's

Speaker:

Track 1: it's like both of those answers are actually i mean they're both to me fit together as.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: One kind of core idea i i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: agree and like it's like i've seen it many times you

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: know but it like as soon as it it popped up

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: on the screen yesterday when i watched it last night it's like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: 2001 a space odyssey like that's just the first

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: thing that came to my mind and of course there's a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: lot to be said that i'm sure we'll talk about with the like lack of dialogue for

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the first what 13 and a half minutes 13 and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a half minutes uh-huh um and this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: sort of like this transition of this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: character from weak to powerful through the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: acquisition or the discovery of a new technology

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: or yeah well i think it's gold in

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this thing it's not it's not oil but like but still like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this is his birth and this is the beginning and yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and i think i think it's very that that moment of silence

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: with this development like almost like a montage not quite a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: montage but a montage of him building up to becoming an oil man

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like again it's very much in that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: parallel right like oil is the obelisk but it

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is not like in a in space odyssey where it's a tribe

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a community discovers new technology he discovers it alone and he will be the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: arbiter of how it's used and how it's deployed no it's like yeah that that will

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: come that will come up a lot yeah yeah like he he's a he's working hard he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he's hustling here yeah he's by himself he's got very few means.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah. And I love the fact that the first 13 and a half minutes is kind of this

Speaker:

Track 1: introduction of just what lengths he's willing to go.

Speaker:

Track 1: You know, he breaks his leg. He's lying there helpless.

Speaker:

Track 1: And then it's almost actually, it's like a really good bookend for the opening,

Speaker:

Track 1: you know, his being weak to the very end.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I feel like it's such a powerful opening in the same way as that,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like, him breaking his leg in the desert and then dragging himself back to civilization.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: That's a whole film on its own. Right?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Isn't that what Quentin Tarantino said? Yeah, right. I think that was Quentin Tarantino.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I don't know what he's... It was something like he loved it,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but the only problem was, or if he was doing it himself or something like that,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the whole movie would just be, yeah, him having the accident in the pit.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And then him making his way back to town.

Speaker:

Track 1: Well, I'm glad he didn't make the movie. You know, we can discuss the merits

Speaker:

Track 1: of Quentin Tarantino versus Paul Thomas Anderson another day.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Oh, yeah. Not today, please. But yeah, it's an incredibly engrossing opening as well.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Like, I watched it with my girlfriend who'd never seen it before. Really?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah, and honestly, like I hadn't watched this film for about 10 years before

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: we decided that we're going to do this episode.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And so I had like a vague memories of it but the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: opening is so engrossing like it's just him in

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a pit like hitting a wall and it's like okay what's he doing who is this guy

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: where is he what like why is he here and so none of those questions are really

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: answered but because all of those questions are there you're immediately just

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: drawn in and like just like what's going on you know it's a really amazing way

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to start a film and a very brave way to start a film I think.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah and this is one thing I think I just sent you this note that the kind of

Speaker:

Track 1: I don't know how they maybe did the first scene but apparently many scenes throughout

Speaker:

Track 1: the film they film in multiple locations because they're just out in the middle

Speaker:

Track 1: of you know the desert and they're filming all these they film in one spot okay

Speaker:

Track 1: like it like like it this way film in another spot,

Speaker:

Track 1: just i just can't it's like it's almost hard to picture daniel day lewis down

Speaker:

Track 1: there you know mining for silver you know like i almost picture him like actually

Speaker:

Track 1: doing this you you believe it so much he just he.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Sells it well that's a method actor right that's his big thing like he's very

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: method and this may not fit here but i was just telling chris before he signed

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: in back when i lived in london i met someone who worked on his film my left

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: foot have you watched that film evan i.

Speaker:

Track 1: Have seen it a long time ago.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And so yeah just for the list like he he plays a disabled artist who is in a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: wheelchair and this person i met who worked on that film he was like everyone

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: who worked on that film the entire crew fucking hated daniel day lewis because

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he would not get out of the wheelchair and on a film set there are wires and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: microphones and shit everywhere,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And every scene, they would have to get four guys to pick him up and carry him

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: onto the floor and then pick him up and take him off. And he just would not

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: get out of the wheelchair.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But if he delivers a performance like that, you know, you just got to give it to him.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: You said, you said, Evan, that like, yeah, like or like to believe that he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: actually down there doing that.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Another thing I was saying to Griff is I think he lives in like Wicklow or Wexford,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like a couple of counties lower than Dublin now at the moment.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And i think he's just like a cobbler that lives in a village down there so like he's.

Speaker:

Track 1: A simple man.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He's a simple man you know i also can't imagine him like making my shoes well

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: again but if i went back home it might happen i mean much like daniel plainview

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the character he's a sort of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: unknowable force he's kind of just a very unknowable person uh-huh that's.

Speaker:

Track 1: That's one of the things that throughout the film just made me think of it is

Speaker:

Track 1: you you never really learn anything about him except the occasional thing that

Speaker:

Track 1: happens throughout it, pretty much only through his half-brother,

Speaker:

Track 1: who we learn later in the film,

Speaker:

Track 1: spoiler, is not his half-brother that was pretending.

Speaker:

Track 1: He has this diary of his actual half-brother. Like, you don't really learn much

Speaker:

Track 1: except for these sort of unreliable bits of information. And it almost,

Speaker:

Track 1: it makes him like this very mysterious person, you know, oh,

Speaker:

Track 1: this capitalist guy, he's mysterious.

Speaker:

Track 1: And I think that's like a way, like a mistake that we look at people now,

Speaker:

Track 1: like, oh, like this guy runs, you know, this, the weapons contractor,

Speaker:

Track 1: he's just some guy, but he's like these are real people with real lives that

Speaker:

Track 1: are doing these horrible things you know i don't know well.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I think like one of the things about there will be blood is it's,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: sort of half a horror film, right? Like you said to me, Evan,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like Daniel Day-Lewis was very focused on like Dracula when he was thinking of this character.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And even the soundtrack, again, my girlfriend never watched it before.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: When the soundtrack came on, she's like, this is a horror movie soundtrack,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: right? It really kind of establishes itself in that way.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And he is a deep character. There's complexities to him that we can get into,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but effectively he is just a monster.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He is just consumption personified, right? He consumes because that's what he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: does. Like, yeah, we'll get there.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah, I think that's a good way to say it. I guess maybe my thought is more

Speaker:

Track 1: like you don't really know what drives him other than just his need to win and

Speaker:

Track 1: defeat everyone around him.

Speaker:

Track 1: But like, as I mentioned, it starts off in New Mexico. He's kind of just prospecting for silver.

Speaker:

Track 1: It turns out he discovers gold.

Speaker:

Track 1: He's, you know, he's selling them, selling the gold. And it turns out that one

Speaker:

Track 1: of his, you know, I don't want to call him co-workers, one of the people working

Speaker:

Track 1: with him dies and leaves his infant son.

Speaker:

Track 1: And so the next thing you really see is the jumps ahead where this kid is now, what, like 10 years old?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I think there's an important part in that, though. So they're now working on

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: oil. And yeah, this guy dies and leaves a baby.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And Daniel Plainview adopts him.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But before his father dies, what's really important is that his father basically baptizes him in oil.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yes i don't know if you caught that like he they're sitting next

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to an oil pit and he like sticks his finger and rubs it on

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: his forehead like a baptism also something even

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: before that i was thinking and even before

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that and even before that it was um so we

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: have this prolonged silence through all of this when he finds the gold and then

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he sells the gold and then we we go forward a couple of years and then they're

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: they're digging for oil it's very like intense sort of scene and then the first

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: sound the first voice in the whole movie is the baby crying,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: yeah and it's sort of like the birth and as they

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: strike oil yeah and i started like that sort of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: marries with like that beginning sort of like as i was saying 2001

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: thing or sort of like the star child the beginning the beginning

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like prospect that he does with the gold is sort of like the impregnation and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: then like when they actually strike gold is the birth and the first the first

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: sound we hear in the entire movie is the baby crying yeah and that and from

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: then on they start talking yeah i don't know if i was looking too much into it no no no definitely.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And because the soundtrack is very much a part of the film like you know like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it starts the horror vibe the silence and then yeah like breaking the silence

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and then because it goes from like the baby crying to him on a train with the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: baby right and there's like this like pretty intimate scene where like the baby is just like,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: sort of playing with his with his um his chin

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and he's sort of leaning into it and it's like very intimate and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: very kind of like i guess emotional yeah sweet

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but at the same time over the top of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: him like having this beautiful moment it is him

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: giving a presentation about how he's a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: family man and he's going to take over the oil in this new

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: town and he's going to make everybody rich and it's because you

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: know i want to support my son just like you want to support your son and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it's like immediately breaking down like this is not a this is not an

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: emotional relationship this is a transaction business relationship

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: everything's transaction yeah although i think

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: we'll get to it i think his actual love for his son which

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: we'll obviously get to we talked a lot like trans like sort

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of transcends that concept a couple of times but i think fundamentally he sees

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: him every action he does as transactional but he is portrayed a little bit by

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that of that by his actual genuine love for this new adopted son yeah which

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: sort of flies in the face of this sort of image he's trying to make for himself,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: humanizing him humanizing a monster uh-huh yeah but that just adds to the intrigue.

Speaker:

Track 1: The only moments where he where it does seem like he has like gen uh genuine

Speaker:

Track 1: care for his his you know adopted son is mostly behind kind of like closed doors

Speaker:

Track 1: he doesn't portray any of this

Speaker:

Track 1: really for the most, I mean, I know he runs out when he has the accident a little

Speaker:

Track 1: bit later and he's concerned for him, but it does feel like he,

Speaker:

Track 1: when he's in public and he has that meal later on when they're reunited and

Speaker:

Track 1: he's, they're eating it and it's very much, he's using him in public as this kind of, this pawn.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I would say the way, cause I was thinking about this a lot, the way I conceived of it,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that relationship, I think Daniel Plainview believes that he loves his son but

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he's also a very like he's fundamentally kind of empty and he's fundamentally

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: cruel so the only love he can offer is empty and cruel,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Like, you know what I mean? Like he believes that's love, but that's, you know what I mean?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I would, I disagree slightly, but like not disagree, but I'd say like,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it's more, there's like levels of importance in his operation.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And he has time for compassion and love for this, for this child.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah, he makes time for it. He does show it. But transactionality and his,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and benefit and his ability to manipulate and coax people in times of trying

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to manipulate people, then he will utilize the sun in that way.

Speaker:

Track 1: And his son is named hw2 which to me.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Sounds like the name that's from 1911 yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: go this so my whole my whole theory on this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you might as well bring out the top so like the oil

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: boom like the transition to oil right it's often

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: historicized as the second industrial

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: revolution right with the industrial revolution being coal

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and steam the second industrial revolution was petroleum and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: there is now a common tendency to say like the transition

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to digital technology was the third industrial revolution

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and the president who oversaw that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the president who like swept that in was george hw bush

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: so my my theory on that is

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that it's it's a way of drawing a direct parallel between

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the two like this is about the 1900s but it's also about

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the 1990s the 2000s when

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this film was made wouldn't the birth though of the third

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: revolution is the way you're saying it be bill clinton

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but it wouldn't the movie wouldn't be that serious george hw

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: bush is like the first like well not the first but like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the one who really like solidified neoliberalism really solidified digital

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: technology the transition to computers i just think that's my theory i don't

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: know if you agree yeah that's my personal theory it's a way of tying it to into

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like the 21st century but it might you know i mean hw is such a weird name it's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a choice yeah it's like it's a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: choice and we were saying yeah like daniel Day-Lewis' character is Daniel.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And and eli sunday yeah and oh and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: plain view he speaks plainly he speaks plain view he's plain view yeah i i thought

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that that i thought that name had to be a put on but i think later in the movie

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: we sort of like see that like he talks about his family also being plain views

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and maybe that's just a sign of how he he's very good at using what's around

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: him or what he has at hand yeah to,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: further the grift and the you know the grind yeah you know yeah daniel plain

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: view who speaks plainly yeah and eli sunday who is the preacher yeah like speaking.

Speaker:

Track 1: Of like the plain view i think we briefly talked about it when he's in

Speaker:

Track 1: that sort of uh you know i don't know what you call like meeting house telling

Speaker:

Track 1: this community that he's gonna you know he wants to

Speaker:

Track 1: basically buy he's an oil man he's gonna you know uh he's a family business

Speaker:

Track 1: and this whole thing it's like the very first moment where he goes from first

Speaker:

Track 1: of all there's no talking this is sort of your first introduction to him actually

Speaker:

Track 1: speaking and it's just it's so commanding where no matter what these people

Speaker:

Track 1: think of him he doesn't care.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He doesn't.

Speaker:

Track 1: Care if they disagree with him or if they don't want to do it he he has he's

Speaker:

Track 1: decided what he's going to do.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: What because there is a degree that he cares right he is like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: again me and chris had this whole argument i was saying like i don't think

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he's intelligent i think he's just cunning and i said no he is but like they'll

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like the first time we see him speak he is speaking to a town and then there's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like this uproar of people like i'm not selling my land and so he's just like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you know what fuck it i don't care i'm not like this is too i don't care about

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this conflict i'm leaving,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Right. And like, so he, he definitely has this kind of like,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: yeah, I mean, kind of, I would say cunning. He's a cunning character.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But like to say he's not, to say he isn't smart, saying that he lacks intelligence,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: at least that's what the way I perceive it.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It's just like, no, he sees that situation. He's like, I'm going to undercut

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this sloppy village who can't get their shit together by going up the hill to

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a ranch and just drilling from there.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And also i think that scene would have been better if it was like the monorail scene in the simpsons.

Speaker:

Track 1: You know like it's.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Just first thing i thought of first thing i thought of yeah is there a chance

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the track could bend not on your life my hindu friend yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: I call the big one bitey so

Speaker:

Track 1: talk about the sort of like the cunning versus you

Speaker:

Track 1: know whether he's intelligent i i think it's kind of both

Speaker:

Track 1: and one of the things i was going to point to is so

Speaker:

Track 1: okay so he leaves he kind of storms out of this town and

Speaker:

Track 1: says you know fuck them i'm just gonna go i'll go to a different place and try

Speaker:

Track 1: my luck there but he makes mistakes by some and and then has to backtrack like

Speaker:

Track 1: later on when he opts not to try and buy that one person's land and then later

Speaker:

Track 1: has to go back and sort of become baptized and all these things because of it

Speaker:

Track 1: if he had just made that decision early on yeah.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And and also like when he makes like because that comes back later in there's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i don't know if it's like a real estate broker or his employee but there's a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: bit where he's like oh this guy on this ranch doesn't is refusing to sell he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like well let's wait and he'll come to me

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And then, like, later, like, a few years later, he's like, why don't I own this tract of land?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He's like, it's the guy who said he didn't want to speak, and you said to wait.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And he's like, and he blames this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: guy. He's like, oh, well, why didn't you fucking fix it? You know, like.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah, well, this is maybe an unrelated just question about this is,

Speaker:

Track 1: how much do you think he's relying on sort of his, you know,

Speaker:

Track 1: second in command? I believe it's played by, I don't know.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Kieran Hines?

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah, I was going to pronounce his first name wrong, and there he is.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Kieran, yeah. Yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: So he's sort of like his right-hand man who kind of makes a lot of these decisions.

Speaker:

Track 1: How much do you think is actually he's doing or he's sort of delegating?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I think it's kind of all him. He's no delegator. Yeah.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He's very much like a, this is my business and we do it my way kind of guy, right?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Like, cause I mean, if that character,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like Kieran Hines, he only has like four lines in the whole film.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: There's no real development of that character because this is Daniel Plainview's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: operation and it's done daniel plainview's way right.

Speaker:

Track 1: It's his it's his story and there's no one involved in the story but.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: They have they had to get somebody with a face as storied yeah as daniel day

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: lewis and i think kieran hines has that storied face he's being through shit yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: I'm speaking of i saw something that they asked paul thomas anderson what they

Speaker:

Track 1: used to make the fake oil and he said one of the ingredients is what they use

Speaker:

Track 1: in the mcdonald's milkshakes and i don't know if That was like a jab at the shit.

Speaker:

Track 1: Chocolate? I don't know.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: There's two things in a milkshake. Milk and a shake. Well, I mean,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I think that's interesting because like oil is kind of a character in this film, right? Like,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: there's there's a degree to which it is a it's obviously a driving force of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the film but it's all it almost features as a character it's in so many scenes it's.

Speaker:

Track 1: That's why i i i view and again

Speaker:

Track 1: this wasn't like my original thought of the movie being a horror movie

Speaker:

Track 1: but if you look at the uh actually look at the um the

Speaker:

Track 1: like the poster that they use on wikipedia

Speaker:

Track 1: for it's sort of just him on the it's like a very black background

Speaker:

Track 1: you can only see part of his face because it's shadowed he looks

Speaker:

Track 1: like you know being dracula like in a dracula movie and you know idea of like

Speaker:

Track 1: blood being the oil like the blood of the land and all of that i mean that's

Speaker:

Track 1: sort of like in any dracula movie the blood is very important but it's not the

Speaker:

Track 1: feature of the movie whereas in this i think it's the same way like the oil

Speaker:

Track 1: is a feature of the movie but it's not you know and.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Even the way like like again obviously back then there was less

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: so there was no osha back then but like the way that they're just like they're

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: just you know what osha is this is well yeah i mean america is the global culture

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: chris oh but um but uh like they're just like pools of oil like everywhere there's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: just oil everywhere all over the ground you know what i mean and just like poisoning everything.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah like there's a scene where he throws eli into like that puddle later yeah

Speaker:

Track 1: just like this oil just we'll.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Get to that like.

Speaker:

Track 1: Oh yeah well yeah that's what we have i guess that well i guess

Speaker:

Track 1: we'll first get to his the brother so you're introduced to

Speaker:

Track 1: paul sunday you know this sort of you know

Speaker:

Track 1: young youngish guy i don't know maybe he's his early

Speaker:

Track 1: 20s maybe 20 comes and presents him

Speaker:

Track 1: with a sort of a proposition saying you know there's potential

Speaker:

Track 1: oil for you to drill i'm not going to tell you where it is initially he wants

Speaker:

Track 1: him to give him money you know for this information and of course daniel planvu

Speaker:

Track 1: is like you know playing hardball is not going to give it he won't even give

Speaker:

Track 1: him a small amount of money to him for the potential to making What is interesting.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Because that scene ends with these, like, here is $600 right now.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Tell me something I want to hear.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And I think it's an interesting scene because it's one of the only scenes where

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: someone matches Daniel Plainview's energy and he doesn't explode.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Because there's a couple of times people match him and he like explodes at them.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: In this one, like one of his lines is this, you don't treat me like I'm stupid.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And Daniel Plainview sort of respects that line. Yeah, exactly.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I think he respects that sort of plain speak. He always says,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I'm a plain speaker, you know.

Speaker:

Track 1: And then we learn later on that Paul Sunday actually got something out of all

Speaker:

Track 1: this. He actually made a business with some wells.

Speaker:

Track 1: He probably made enough money to do well.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He says $5,000 a week, which today, that's pretty fucking good.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah, well, that's right. Oh, is that how much he makes?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah, he says he makes $5,000 a week. Well, that's how much Daniel makes,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but not that. No, that's how much Paul makes.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: That's when he's taunting Eli. He's like, I gave him $10,000,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and now he makes $5,000 a week.

Speaker:

Track 1: So that's the equivalent of $93,000 per week.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah. okay.

Speaker:

Track 1: So he's he's loaded.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And i think you think you've ever held 93 000

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: no but like that's that's i think it's an interesting scene because it is like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: at that point daniel playview obviously he's got a business going it's it's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: doing reasonably well at least and he is like in a good position but that is

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the only scene where someone again like i said kind of matches his energy it's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like stop like you're not gonna fuck me around you're not gonna trick me,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Like, I know what you're about, and I'm the same. And he doesn't explode.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He actually respects the way that Paul treats him. It's a straight speaker.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah. I think he's a straight speaker. It's like, this is a transaction.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I'm going to give you this. But then at the very end of their transaction,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: after he shows them where the actual land is, he's like, oh,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and if you're lying to me, I'm going to come and take more than my 5,000 back. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: I think it's also early enough in this time period for Plainview where he's like,

Speaker:

Track 1: he has money but he's not to the point where he feels like he should or deserves

Speaker:

Track 1: or you know is owed to be this wealthy so he's willing to take this you know

Speaker:

Track 1: this chance and what it then leads him to is going out to the ranch or the i

Speaker:

Track 1: guess it's a ranch or what do you would call it just a.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: They call it a ranch they call it a ranch yeah it's a sunday which has.

Speaker:

Track 1: Quails and so he goes out there with his son hw and he goes under the guise

Speaker:

Track 1: of saying we're going looking for quail.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: We're going quail.

Speaker:

Track 1: Hunting and i think one of the things that i saw somewhere else in just general

Speaker:

Track 1: the idea of quail being used as this metaphor for kind of this kind of flimsy

Speaker:

Track 1: little bird that's easy to take down in.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: The same way that he goes.

Speaker:

Track 1: After these towns and takes them down like he's hunting quail.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I would also say like i don't know if it's the same association in the united

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: states but i would say quail is like quite a regal thing like hunting quail

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is like an aristocratic pursuit yes.

Speaker:

Track 1: I picture like the queen or the king like going hunting for quail.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But also that that scene when he goes onto the ranch

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is in itself really interesting like he kind of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: walks up and that is i think it's called abel the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: father of the sunday family comes out he's like oh yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i just i came here hunting can i camp on your land and he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like yeah you can camp and he's like do you have any water he's like the water's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: over there and he's like do you have any bread he's like no but

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i got potatoes oh i would like some potatoes if you've got

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: them and the whole time i'm watching that i'm like i'm waiting

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: for the point where he goes okay how much do you want for four potatoes

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: or like how much do you want to stay the night and it's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it feels really awkward because that question is never asked he's just like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: okay here i am i'll take it i'll take your food i'll take your water i'm gonna

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: camp here yeah and then and then as um as they're walking away the father like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like pursues him just a couple of steps and says oh by the way i'm really sorry

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that we don't have any bread.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And I think that comes up later, this shame, the shame of not having bread and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the power of bread as a status, not a status symbol.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It's a symbol of, of not prosperity, but it's like, it's like the basic to have bread is the basic.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah. And, and, and he's like, I'm sorry, we don't have that.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And also it's a humiliation for me not to be able to offer that to you.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And it's, and it also like, considering the theme of, of, of the whole film,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like bread is very kind of Christian coded as a food, right?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Like the body of Christ is bread, Christ to turn fish and bread into,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to feed the 5,000, you know?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Well, yeah, like he's obviously not able, even when his, his son,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Eli comes along, can't offer it.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Like they're not, they're, they're not good Catholics.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: What are they? They're Pentecostals? Evangelists?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: They're like Baptists or some shit. Baptists. Those are the crazy – which ones

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: are those ones? The American ones.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: No, but the ones that like just make it up as they go along.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah, any American Christian makes it up as they go along. Okay, I guess.

Speaker:

Track 1: Well, and what I also took from that scene that I – it's funny.

Speaker:

Track 1: I was like when you said you were kind of watching, you know,

Speaker:

Track 1: kind of watching something, I went back to watch just a couple of scenes.

Speaker:

Track 1: And what I thought of when I watched that one again is that they're offering

Speaker:

Track 1: him food, a place to stay. I think that she gives him like a jug of milk and

Speaker:

Track 1: all this, all this has like this high, you know, this, this hospitality.

Speaker:

Track 1: And in return, he gives them, you know, none.

Speaker:

Track 1: The transaction in this case is I give you all these things so that you can

Speaker:

Track 1: like live and survive on my land. And I steal basically.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: The last time I watched it was. But they are, they are pre-capitalist minded.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: That's the thing. They are, they are, they are religious, religious.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: They're religiously minded. That is the ruling order. the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: ruling order of this land is the church is religion

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: so yeah it's not

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: yet that transactional or like capitalistically transactional

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: so their idea of giving is natural

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but but i think it also shows that like his immediate desire to exploit this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: community and like i said like in the scene i re-watched it i literally watched

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the film like three hours ago and it feels really awkward and i don't i think

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that's intentionally performed as they're talking there are a lot of pauses

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: there a lot of open pauses where you're kind of waiting for him to be like,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: okay, and I'll give you, I don't know, $10 or I'll give you a dollar or something.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: There's like a lot of pauses where you're waiting for him to say that. It just never comes.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And it feels awkward that he doesn't offer it. And I think it's really a sign

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of his character that like, yeah, I'm not even going to pretend that I'm offering you something.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah, because he's not a Christian. He's something new. And he's something new

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this land has not yet seen. They're not prepared for it. They don't know how to deal with this.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And they're sort of shocked. They're set aback.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah. You know, that they're like okay take yeah whatever you want keep taking yeah yeah i guess.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah. Do you think that they were expecting him to offer them money and then

Speaker:

Track 1: he doesn't? And so they are too...

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I don't think so. I don't think they're expecting him, but I think as a viewer,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that's what you expect, right? That's what you're expecting him to do.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And again, the way it's performed, like I said, there's a lot of sort of pauses

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: in the conversation where it's almost like, okay, that's when he's going to

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: say, like, I'll give you this money. And it just never happens.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: At least that's how it felt to me.

Speaker:

Track 1: But if you but if you somehow made this movie and showed it to someone in 1911

Speaker:

Track 1: like if they could see this this action happening they wouldn't expect it yeah

Speaker:

Track 1: expect it i think it's like you know the you know hyper capitalist you know

Speaker:

Track 1: mode we're in now it's like they're just giving him milk and potatoes for nothing that's.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: That's funny because i was watching because i was watching it yesterday and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: my girlfriend said the exact same thing i didn't bat an eyelid but

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you did and my girlfriend and it's like are they not going to pay for

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this yeah you know yeah and i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: think that that's actually quite interesting because it shows because i we will

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: get into this but i think this movie is about the death as i was saying before

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the death of this sort of religious like dominant order to christian society

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: christian dominant or the protestant sort of society society and now we're moving

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: into a into a capitalist society.

Speaker:

Track 1: Well so this this like i guess that's like that's a perfect segue is

Speaker:

Track 1: when he goes inside and he meets his family

Speaker:

Track 1: and there he's now put in front of he at this

Speaker:

Track 1: point he doesn't know that eli he doesn't under doesn't know

Speaker:

Track 1: there's a twin brother and let me also add initially they didn't they had cast

Speaker:

Track 1: two different people and so the actor who plays him which is paul dano he was

Speaker:

Track 1: only going to play um the uh the first brother and then they changed their mind

Speaker:

Track 1: thinking like after they saw him doing some scenes he's like maybe you should

Speaker:

Track 1: just do both and they change it to being the twin brothers.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Good decision. That was a good decision. It's a really good introduction because,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: so he comes back and he tries to bamboozle the father of the family in this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: really crude way where he's like, oh, my son is sick and he needs the dry air.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I want your land, $3,700 right now. Take it, right now. Take it, take it.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And then it's Eli who cuts in and is quite shrewd. And he's like,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: well, what about the oil we have in our land?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And Daniel Day-Lewis is sort of trying to play this off casually. he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like oh i don't know about oil i just want the dry air and then

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: there's like this really funny line i think it is really

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: funny where eli's like there is literally

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: oil coming out of the earth onto the land and daniel day lewis just shoots at

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: him he's like i believe that's called seepage but i wouldn't know about that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: which is like which considering the context of him pretending not to know about

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: oil is a hilarious thing to say he drops he drops the facade relatively quickly i.

Speaker:

Track 1: Don't know anything about cars but here's.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: This carburetor or something something yeah yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: Like you don't you don't really buy it i mean i mean obviously eli does not

Speaker:

Track 1: know that he's met with his brother and he's come out there and this is how

Speaker:

Track 1: he's how he's found it i think he also says something like these are not oil

Speaker:

Track 1: prices these are quail prices.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah i'm not offering you.

Speaker:

Track 1: The money for oil i'm offering you the money for quail.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: If there happens that's a hw,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He says that to H.W. beforehand.

Speaker:

Track 1: Oh, that's right. You're right.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: How much are we going to pay for the land? He's like, I'll offer them quail prices. Yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: Right.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And I think that's sort of important because that sets up H.W.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: As this sort of sounding board for Daniel.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: You know, that relationship is useful for Daniel.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Daniel likes having H.W. around because he gets to voice.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It's also H.W. who finds the oil.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It's not Daniel Plainview. It's H.W. who finds it. But also,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: we're going to get into this because I have this whole thing about the voices.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And I think it's pretty obvious, but like the battle of voices in this movie.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And I think one of the things he likes about his son, H.W., is H.W. can hear his voice.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And Daniel needs to be heard because Daniel loves his own voice.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Well, yeah, I mean, what's going to happen later? Oh, no, his son's not going

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to be able to hear his voice.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And also with the brother as well. There's a clear need that is being fulfilled by H.W.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: For Daniel Plameview. Yeah, he craves to be alone because he's so superior.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: If he's truly alone, nobody can hear him. Yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: His son also doesn't speak very much, even when he's able to.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah, I know.

Speaker:

Track 1: And it's because, I think also for the same reasons, that Daniel Day-Lewis or

Speaker:

Track 1: Plainview wants, he doesn't want just to be heard.

Speaker:

Track 1: He also likes to hear himself talk.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah, that's the point. Yeah, but he's not going to talk to himself.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: That's the actions of a madman. so he he just needs like a scarecrow even character at the beginning he.

Speaker:

Track 1: Doesn't talk himself in the mind right he's just.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: No he doesn't he's silent he doesn't and i think the brother half brother who

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: pops up later like looks like a scarecrow as well you know yeah he's just like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that's what he is he's just a scarecrow but it's also like i mean do we want

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to jump ahead to what happens to hw or are we gonna stick well let's let's run through well.

Speaker:

Track 1: The only other thing i want to mention i think that because it's a good piece

Speaker:

Track 1: is so as part of the negotiation with eli's family is that he wants money to open a church.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah and like that's the crucial moment five

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: thousand dollars i'll i'll bring this up repeatedly but like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the five thousand dollars never goes away

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: even in the final scene of the film he's like where are my five

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: thousand dollars and it's right from that moment they meet

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he's like give me five thousand dollars for the church with interest

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he asked for we yeah but like it this these

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: are different structures of power there is the religious power and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: there's the capitalistic power and i think we get our first sight of this when

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he when he says why do you want five i don't think he says that but something

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like what do you want five thousand dollars for or what would you use it for

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: something like that and he says my church yeah not the church right my church,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Like, if you give me this money, this will help my sphere of influence.

Speaker:

Track 1: How do Eli and Plainview and Dan Plainview sort of, like in some ways they're

Speaker:

Track 1: very similar, but just they're coming from a very different,

Speaker:

Track 1: one is coming from this, like you said at the beginning, like the religion versus capitalism.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah. But in some ways I still think they're very similar. It's just the power

Speaker:

Track 1: structure is different.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah, like they both are striving and craving for power.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Power over people and power of their own destiny

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but i was talking to griff about this is sort of a thing

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that i don't think can be overlooked is this like nichian quality

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to daniel plain view he has this sort of master morality and where he believes

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that everything he does is right and might is right and that's that's what that's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and god is dead right and god is dead yeah and And then the opposite is Eli.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Eli is the old power.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And he believes that he, through meekness and through allowing other people

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to be meek, and like that's his savior complex.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: So I think they're both trying to achieve the same goal ultimately,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but they're antithetical in the way that they're viewing like the journey to power.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And Eli is unfortunately finding out that he is outdated in the face of this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: apex predator that is capitalism and Daniel Plainview.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And if I can put my own slightly different but pretty similar philosophical take on it.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I think he's got it. I think a lot of this film can be summed up with the Gramsci

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: quote, which is like, the old world is dying.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: The new world is strong to be born. Now is the time of monsters. Eli is the old world.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And the second that Daniel Plainview turns up, that old world is gone.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But he can't accept that the old world is gone for a long time.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He eventually will be a little bit more successful.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But like the old world is dying and Eli is the old world.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Daniel Plainview is the new world that is struggling to take over.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And what you see in that conflict. And there will be blood in that birth. Right. Yeah.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: That's it. Their conflict is the old world versus the new world.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Is America a good Christian nation of yeomen farmers, as Benjamin Franklin put

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it? or is it a world of capitalist sharks as daniel plainview views it and as it is now and.

Speaker:

Track 1: Even in 2025 well obviously the church doesn't carry the same the same weight

Speaker:

Track 1: i mean it is they've now almost merged in a way you know well maybe i won't

Speaker:

Track 1: go this direction i was going to.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Say it almost merged.

Speaker:

Track 1: To the point where the political structure uses religion as its attempt to divide people.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And yeah because that's the only way it can survive as this symbiotic,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: sort of like like parasitic entity that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: can attach on and i think at the very very end of the movie and this is jumping

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: way ahead is is eli's last ditch

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: attempt for relevancy is to become symbiotic

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to plain view but it's not it doesn't go well it's not necessarily an attempt

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: because when when eli comes in the final scene again with jumping ahead but

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he is a successful he says he works on the radio but he's essentially a televangelist

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you know he's got a three-piece suit he's got a silver cross he's got rings

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that griftings look amazing great it's a great fit.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But like the first thing he said to me but you know what i mean like he has yeah he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he does eventually adapt to this new world but the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: point is that like yeah this old world is done right this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: american dream of like go out west and you can be the king

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of your 10 acres when we see them arrive in

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it's called little boston right the town yeah yeah when he when he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: drives into little boston it is a fucking shithole it

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is this dead desert town the brother

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: paul sunday who sold him the who sold him

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the location literally says it's like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: they say do you have water he's like it's all salt water there's not

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: even fresh water it's the it's just it is hell yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: disgusting horrible place and it's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like yeah that i that first american dream of be the king of your land is dead

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: now we're on the second American dream be the capitalist and take what's yours

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you know it's like yeah and they even ask the he even finds the register or

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: registrar or something and like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to look at who owns all the land and he's like can this land be bought,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: cheaply yeah and the guy goes yes it's like how much of it all of it yeah you

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: know it's like this is just waste yeah yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: And the the um like he my notes when he was kind of giving this like this is

Speaker:

Track 1: sort of his second big speech to the people you know in this in this mind when

Speaker:

Track 1: he he has the uh the what do you call it what is this too well yeah this is

Speaker:

Track 1: when eli wants to bless the new.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Well that he's creating and.

Speaker:

Track 1: He's giving this huge speech to the town like i'm gonna bring you schools and

Speaker:

Track 1: education and there's going to be we're going to do irrigation and you're going

Speaker:

Track 1: to have grain and you're going to have bread and they're probably thinking like yeah this is this is.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: This is sick yeah but that i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: think that that goes back into that the sort of master morality because

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he he even says that at the first meeting he's like there there are

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: other prospectors there are other oil men but no

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: one will treat you as good as i will but i like what comes from me

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is ultimately the good and what

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: comes from not me is ultimately the bad

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: so when he he gets to like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: recontextualize progress schools

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: education health bread as he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: brings up like that's the first thing he says in that speech and that's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: why i think he is smart because he remembers that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: moment of embarrassment when the guy said i'm sorry i can't bring you any bread

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and when he's having the meeting with the townspeople he the first thing he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: brings up is how bread should be yeah like the first thing the first thing everybody

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: should have bread on their table yeah so he he has yeah go ahead i was gonna

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: say and i think you can also look at it as like.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Again as we're talking about like this new world taking over the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the first world of the united states you can also

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: see it as like a second round of colonization you

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: know for me that whole speech of like you know i'm

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: gonna you know we're gonna bring water and we're gonna grow bread

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and like all this stuff it's like it's almost identical to

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like the israeli we're gonna make the desert bloom you know

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it's like this colonial idea of like i'm coming in

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and i'm gonna fix everything for you because you guys don't know how

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to fucking do anything right you guys have you guys have had this land for i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: don't know 50 100 years you've done nothing with it now i'm gonna fix it and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: there's like again you see just after he makes that speech all of his oil men

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: coming in and setting up their own camp and he's like they're bringing their

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: families and like they're coming to colonize this town yeah you know like it's.

Speaker:

Track 1: It's it's funny you said that in my notes when i when they were setting up the

Speaker:

Track 1: thing i wrote that it was like colonization and.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It's basically.

Speaker:

Track 1: The the you know the even though the gold rush had already happened you know

Speaker:

Track 1: what 50 years prior and that people had gone west like things had sort of like

Speaker:

Track 1: gone downhill like people weren't still it wasn't the same boom anymore and

Speaker:

Track 1: he's coming out there to re it's almost like recolonizing in a weird.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Way And I think that goes back to this idea, we both talked about it, right?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It's like you have this old world, you have the original United States,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: which was this entirely kind of theocratic Christian colonization.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And now you have the second round, which is the capitalist, largely secular colonization.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And, you know, it's just, it's almost like, yeah, this is just the history of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: how the United States works. It's just new rounds of colonization,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: new rounds of colonization.

Speaker:

Track 1: I also love that Eli is just standing there when he wants to do the blessing.

Speaker:

Track 1: And he just basically like is dumbfounded, like the dumb look on his face.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Oh, it's such a bird. It's so good. It's such a bird. Yeah. Like, yeah. Like, yeah.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I mean, I'm sure everybody listening has seen the movie, but yeah,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he goes, meets him. He's like, is there anything you need me to do?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And Daniel's like, nope. And he's like, you know what? I'm going to bless the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: well. Bless the well tomorrow. What time suits you?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Four o'clock? four o'clock suits me and also you know and also

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the fact he drags up eli's sister so eli's little sister in

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like her white dress they name the name christine they name

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it after the the mary mary sunday

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the mary derrick or the mary drill

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: whatever but like yeah it's it's like a massive it is a massive like i'm here

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: now and now i'm in charge right like your time is over but that's one thing

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i want to i want to bring up because this happens a lot is there is this fundamental

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: battle between them where they will not where they're attempting to put words

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: in each other's mouths all the time.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And they won't allow each other to do it they they are

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: equals in this way when we're saying like oh are

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: they the same like do they share characteristics i think

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: originally when they meet he says oh yeah when you build this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: structure and then um and daniel plainview

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: goes it's called a derrick and eli goes yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: whatever like he won't even say the word that he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: has just been educated on and then when it comes to

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: um it comes to the meeting that they're having it's like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: at four o'clock oh yeah i'll say i'll see you at four o'clock okay like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and then i'll give a blessing and i'll do that for you

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but then daniel will not allow him to

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: put to do it it won't allow him to put words in to

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: his mouth or into his industry and this will come up

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a lot later and that's why i was saying to griff things we

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: will get to like the baptism scene um are so

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: so so powerful because finally the dam

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: breaks and i'm one of the characters puts the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: words in the other person's mouth and then that of course

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: comes back at the very end as well in reverse and also and also the baptism

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: scene is also a reference to another scene where david lewis like shoves like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: literally shoves oil into eli's mouth yeah exactly yeah yeah yeah like yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he's putting the words for ogress into his mouth yeah you know like eat it eat it that.

Speaker:

Track 1: Initial scene is not that far so like after the the

Speaker:

Track 1: like not blessing the church like the the wells oh the well is now open it's

Speaker:

Track 1: now open for you know open for business and his son is just hw just like sitting

Speaker:

Track 1: on the roof watching this happen and it blows up and he's like thrown back and

Speaker:

Track 1: you know also the music during this scene is fucking amazing.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Do you know do you know who did who did the music.

Speaker:

Track 1: I do know who did the music.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah, Johnny Greenwood.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Canceled. Canceled. But yeah, Johnny Greenwood, they had the music.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And I think the thing is, there's like this shrill, like fiddle note.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It's not even like, it's like a rusty string.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah. That like every so often just peaks its head above the murmurs of the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: diegetic, like sounds in space.

Speaker:

Track 1: He did the new movie too.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Did he? Oh yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah, it's really good.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah. yeah and then like it's like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you you don't even notice that this rusty string is

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: being played but it makes the scene and then when this explosion

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: happens it starts to like become present

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: well i mean because we should say so like what happens is

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: um hw gets blown off the roof and he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: deafened by the shockwave like permanently deafened and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the way that sound is used in that scene is incredible because

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you see him lying on the floor and it's like this kind of like underwater sound

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i'm not how to describe but like yeah it's like almost he's underwater

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like you can kind of hear but not really and then it goes

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to daniel plane view running and then you can hear

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: all of the sound with the music like you said it's swelling

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and then it goes back to hw and it's like this underwater sound like the way

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: they play with the audio in that scene is incredible oh that whole scene is

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: just so iconic yeah is it is it no it's not done in one shot i think i think

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: there's there's a state there's a couple of like steady cam shots yeah something

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like that with them running around yeah there's a few yeah yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: We didn't we didn't well i mentioned earlier like the this is kind of unrelated

Speaker:

Track 1: but in some ways maybe just the way that they shoot the film and in a lot of

Speaker:

Track 1: the scenes like especially the one with when he's with eli he's negotiating

Speaker:

Track 1: they use these like long takes but.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: They'll also.

Speaker:

Track 1: Do it using two different sort of shots or framings of the same scene which

Speaker:

Track 1: i don't know that i see this very often in other movies like now that i like

Speaker:

Track 1: noticed it from this i mean I'll keep my eyes out,

Speaker:

Track 1: but they'll frame it in one way, and they won't cut, and then they'll frame it in a different way.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Well, I would say, like, I think one of the things with P.T.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Anderson as, like, an auteur, if we can use that phrase, is... Why not?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It is the editing, right? Like, the way he edits, it's very...

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I mean, the only way I can describe it is sparse. It's lots of cuts.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Scenes are often introduced without context. Like, scenes are often introduced without context.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: A lot in this film, but also, like, in Boogie Nights or The Master,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you get, like, a lot of just, okay, cut, and something else is happening.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And that seems to be like a big part of his style and like the audio plays into that as well.

Speaker:

Track 1: It adds like it almost like creates a

Speaker:

Track 1: confusion almost as the viewer but in

Speaker:

Track 1: a way that makes it more compelling like it could be it could be done poorly

Speaker:

Track 1: you know like a crappier film you know director would make it to the point where

Speaker:

Track 1: it looks poor and what was i going to mention too i actually something crazy

Speaker:

Track 1: is you said he uses a lot of cuts apparently in this film he used like way less

Speaker:

Track 1: cuts than normally does.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I would say it's not about the number of cuts, but it's about the way the cuts are used.

Speaker:

Track 1: Oh, the way that, okay, gotcha.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah, right? Like, for example, like, in that scene where the oil rig is burning,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he actually breaks continuity. I don't know if you noticed that.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: So, like, the oil rig explodes like the middle of the day. It's sunny.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And then Daniel Playview runs up, grabs H.W., he takes him into this cabin,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and he's like, you're safe now, you're safe now.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But then he leaves, and he runs back out, and it's the middle of the night.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: The continuity is gone.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It's not nighttime. It is. By the time?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It's the clouds created by the burning oil has blacked out the sun.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: No, because you see H.W. in the cabin, and it's nighttime in the cabin.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I felt the same. but then you can see the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: horizon you can see it's daytime but above they've

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: blacked out the sun itself sunday but

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i mean again like as i say like with the with these cuts it's it's not about

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the number of cuts it's not that it's like i know something like memento where

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it's constantly cutting all the time it's more that like every scene is almost

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: its own vignette you know what i mean like every scene is introduced without context that's.

Speaker:

Track 1: How the master feels for sure.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah. Right. And like it's played out and then you move on to something else.

Speaker:

Track 1: It's like, yeah, that's true. Well, but so,

Speaker:

Track 1: so after he's, his son is now deaf and internally Plainview is probably like

Speaker:

Track 1: freaking out because now he, he has this, but he would probably refer to as

Speaker:

Track 1: sort of like, he's now defective. He can no longer be this.

Speaker:

Track 1: I can't take him on the road as my family business. Right.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I would actually say that's some of the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: most interesting part scenes for daniel playing his character

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: yeah because you do see him being genuinely

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like at least as far as he can be loving

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: right like you have the scene where he's like they're both covered in oil he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: lying on the floor with it with hw and hw is like making these noises because

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he can't hear anything and he's just lying there stroking his hair and like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it's like he is trying to express love like there's a clear love and there's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a clear concern for this child.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But he's just unable to, like, fit it into his worldview.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah, I think that, like, this is the most interesting characterization.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Well, maybe one of them, there's so many, of Daniel Plainview's character.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Because there is a moment where, yeah, like, the rig is burning.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And I think it's Kieran Hines' character.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He's got a frown on his face. And Daniel Day-Lewis, or Daniel Plainview,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: says, What are you sad about?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: What are you sad about or like what like there's an

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: ocean of oil underneath us and like the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: only person that can get at it is me and and there's also the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: visual contrast because you see kieran hines clean like yeah and then daniel

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: day lewis because he's covered in oil you can just see like eyes and teeth yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and the flames like a cheshire cat yeah the flames like reflecting in his eyes

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but then i think it's kieran hines says uh like and hw is he okay and then daniel

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: playmary goes Nope, he is not.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And I think, but I think this like speaks again to like his sort of worldview.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He knows and he has been through these like...

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Hardships and these are sacrifices he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: willing to make people have died on his watch he's fucked

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: up his leg almost died he's almost died and this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is the latest uh sort of consequence and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he feels this consequence and there will be blood yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he feels like this is sort of like he feels bad that this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: has happened but he sort of understands that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this is the way but again like in his in his

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: mind in this there will be blood there will

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: be blood but he feels bad he does feel bad for

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: himself also with hw right because the immediately next

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he's like okay who can i call to fix this yeah right

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: hw can't hear anything who can i call to

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: fix fix this and he doesn't i mean

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he kind of in a physical way abandons hw.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But he's like okay i'm gonna send him to this really expensive school

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: where they can fix these things and there's like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: there is like a a kernel of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: love right there's like something like he doesn't just okay

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you go to like the fucking nunnery and someone else can adopt you

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but i would say i would say there's even more than a kernel of love

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and this is this is the characterization that's kind of like conflicts with

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: what you think his character is um like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: as i alluded to earlier like that i think like daniel's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: plain view daniel plain views power is his voice or

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: at least that's his weapon that's his venom when hw

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: loses his hair he doesn't say i can't hear he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: says i can't hear my voice yeah that's the line

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he uses say like i can't hear anything like i can't hear you because i can't

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: hear my voice is the line but when but once he can't use his voice on his son

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: anymore he loses power over the song yeah but like yeah but he still loves him

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and then and then of course we've got the train scene yeah which is extremely powerful oh.

Speaker:

Track 1: Where he basically just.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah i think like off the train because before the the brother comes before

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the train scene but if we stick with the train scene.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Again, if you think about that as just like a normal human being.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It's an extremely painful, extremely painful thing to do to send your child away.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: You think you're doing what's right by them, but it's still like leaving them on their own.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And if you're a normal human being, you would embrace that moment,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: feel it, right? Like feel that moment, embrace it.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And for him, he's like, he's literally just like, oh, I have to go speak to

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a guy. I'm just going to go over there and then just leaves him forever.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But he's pained. He's pained by his cowardice. like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and this is antithetical to his sort of plain speak but

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he is i'm a plain speaker i you know there's no

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: smoke and mirrors with me you know but again then he but

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he can't hear him so it's exactly can't use his

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: head and he becomes this sort of like version

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of himself and he doesn't like and important to

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that is like so before like hw is deafened

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and that's when his so-called brother arrives

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and so hw has been deafened and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like hw and daniel play if you're living like a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: one-room cabin and his brother's there and he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: puts hw to bed and then he's drinking with his brother outside and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he he has like again a vulnerable moment with

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this brother where he kind of like they're getting drunk he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like i just can't handle people anymore like i just hate people i can't handle

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it and he kind of really opens himself up to the brother and then once that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: opening has happened hw is out now my now the brother is my like emotional crux

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: right now the brother is his sounding board exactly like you know and.

Speaker:

Track 1: He says like the line he says to him he said or one of the lines i wrote down

Speaker:

Track 1: in that conversation he says.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I have a.

Speaker:

Track 1: Competition in me and i don't want.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Anyone else.

Speaker:

Track 1: To succeed like he has like he it's not really directly related to that,

Speaker:

Track 1: to this, in a way, it's, he has this fire to put out any competition he has.

Speaker:

Track 1: So his son, who he does seem to love, but can't really express it,

Speaker:

Track 1: no longer can maybe fill the need for him to compete.

Speaker:

Track 1: So he's got all of a sudden this, like something fell in his lap.

Speaker:

Track 1: Oh, I got a half brother. He gave me this convincing story.

Speaker:

Track 1: He has this journal, he has this letter, all this stuff. and then boom he just

Speaker:

Track 1: he comes in and replaces him it's like uh perfect.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I'll tell yeah yeah and i think i think even daniel like like alludes to that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like how for like he doesn't say this but basically how fortuitous yeah you

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: know for this to happen like this works perfectly but me and griff were saying

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: maybe this is controversial let's see what you think,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: This is when the movie goes off the rails.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: This introduction, so late in the game, of this new character,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: we, as the audience, I believe, have been transfixed.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: We've been transfixed by the world and the characters that have been given to us.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And we understand Daniel as, like, absolutely powerful.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And then as soon as this half-brother comes in, it's clear to all of us in the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: audience that this is a trickster.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And this weakens our view of daniel plainview and this oh.

Speaker:

Track 1: Because because he's because he's let this vulnerability take the get the best of him you think.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah exactly he he he's let go of his senses here and he goes along with it

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: because yeah he it's like fortuitous for him maybe this need this need to be

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: heard this need for his voice yeah and to be um to be appreciated and revered,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he allows this trickster into his life.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And as an audience member, we're sort of like, I found it uncomfortable.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And what I was saying to Griffith is like, if they just cut this character,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: we do learn a lot of characterizations about Daniel Plainview through the character of the half-brother.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Surely. But if they just cut that out.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And they went straight to the baptism scene, they

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: went straight to the bandies the bandy camp like the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the attractive land he needs for the for the pipeline and that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he has to go get baptized i think this would be a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: tighter movie but i i think it's really

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: important because what this shows us

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: right the brother comes in as hw has sort

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of in daniel plainview's view being lost

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: what it shows us is like yeah this isn't a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: shark this isn't a predator this is a human being it's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a human being who like all human beings needs

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: an emotional connection needs emotional respite

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and what it shows us is that like yeah he's not what

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he says he is he needs this emotional ability he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: needs to it needs he needs it to be on his own terms but he is desperate for

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: someone to emotionally connect to so he's like not much not as much of an island

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: as he yeah as he says exactly right like yeah no human being is a fucking I

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: don't know tiger in the jungle like he was,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Sorry, yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: Well, but I agree with you, Graeme. I think that you do need him to kind of ground him in some way.

Speaker:

Track 1: But then immediately when he discovers who he really is, because he doesn't

Speaker:

Track 1: have this, you know, he lets something slip.

Speaker:

Track 1: And so when he asks him the name of this other farm,

Speaker:

Track 1: and he doesn't know, and he ends up killing him, I think that takes you back

Speaker:

Track 1: to sort of the pre-Path Brother thing where he is willing to do whatever it

Speaker:

Track 1: takes. You know, he kills.

Speaker:

Track 1: Like, he doesn't, this is the only person he kills directly.

Speaker:

Track 1: I mean, he probably kills and hurts other people through his oil exploration.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Spoilers.

Speaker:

Track 1: Well, I guess at this moment.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: No, no, no.

Speaker:

Track 1: So I think it's important. It also leads to why he has to be baptized, right?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But yeah, no, I mean, I think the Brother subplot, like what I'm trying to say

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is, I think it's really important because it shows that like,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: again, this kind of American ideal of the shark, the capitalist predator, it's not a real thing.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Like we're not sharks, we're human beings and we need to have,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: we need to have an emotional connection. We need to have an emotional sounding

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: board. We need someone to connect with.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And that's why he so fully embraces the brother.

Speaker:

Track 1: And what's interesting too about the brother and all of the scenes that you

Speaker:

Track 1: see him like sort of join him with, you know, various deals.

Speaker:

Track 1: Like when he's, when this other

Speaker:

Track 1: group is trying to buy you know buy his uh his oil from him and he won't.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Sell he doesn't really.

Speaker:

Track 1: Say anything just like how hw doesn't say he's just there he's like window dress.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Well again i think it's that he brings back the.

Speaker:

Track 1: Illusion of this family business again.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And this like his brother as it turns out is a con man so he obviously picks

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: up on this like daniel plainview,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: needs to feel an emotional connection but he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: doesn't he doesn't want an actual emotional

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: connection right like all these fucking like these days like manosphere guys

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: who's like they don't want a relationship right a relationship is conflict it

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is a back and forth it is sacrificing things for the other person that's not

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: what Daniel Plainview wants but he wants to feel like he has it,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: right like and and that's what the brother is able to provide for him that's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: what hw because hw is a literal child was able to provide for him and.

Speaker:

Track 1: He does like a masterful job in as you said like you you sort of don't think

Speaker:

Track 1: of him as a con man but that is what he you know he is and he's like he talks

Speaker:

Track 1: about he's been to jail and i mean you don't know any of the things he said

Speaker:

Track 1: is true other than the fact that he had met his actual half-brother and stole his identity.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah no and i think again like it's a hot take like i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: know it's a hot take but i mean i would i would say okay i would

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: say for me like viewing it as like a as a parable of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like the modern american psyche or like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: how the modern american psyche got made i can like this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this way that daniel plainview relates to other people i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: think is very much reflected in like yeah the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: manosphere this idea that like a relationship is someone who

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is there and listens to me and tells

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: me that actually i'm okay as opposed to a real relationship

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: which is like sometimes we're gonna fight sometimes

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i can't do what i want because i accept that we

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: have a relationship sometimes you know i'm gonna

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: sacrifice what i want because i want you to be happier than

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: me you know like that's what a real relationship is but like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: daniel plainview's idea of a relationship is a child who doesn't speak or a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: brother who doesn't speak you know like let me let me ask you a question evan

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: right when he kills his brother right and then he's he buries him and it's like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it's all at night time he cries he whimpers,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he whimpers why did he whimper why did he have a moment of like emotional like.

Speaker:

Track 1: I literally i was literally gonna say the same thing keep going.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I got there first i got there first i have ideas but i asked you first.

Speaker:

Track 1: I can't you literally asked me the question that i

Speaker:

Track 1: was gonna ask you i was gonna say like what do you i i

Speaker:

Track 1: have well i have two theory or two potential

Speaker:

Track 1: reasons like the the real like cynical thing would

Speaker:

Track 1: be he's upset by just having to have done you

Speaker:

Track 1: know labor but emotional labor right yeah yeah

Speaker:

Track 1: like this labor that he's finally actually having to

Speaker:

Track 1: it's not just about having killed the brother it's

Speaker:

Track 1: about his adopted son it's like it's kind of like a culmination of all these

Speaker:

Track 1: things happening at once would probably be my thought i don't think he's upset

Speaker:

Track 1: about killing this con man i think it's like all of the things that have happened

Speaker:

Track 1: have now like bubbled up like the oil.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I have my concept group. Do you have one? Well, yeah. So, I mean,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I think, I think the reason he's so angry, the reason that he kills him is because

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he has revealed himself to a con man, right?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: This is a very controlled, very controlling person.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And he has revealed himself. He's given away emotions. He's talked about his

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: past, which he is unknowable to anyone else.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: No one else knows where he comes from. No one else knows what his past was no

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: one else knows who he was he's given that up to an imposter and he can't accept

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that he has like cracked his shell to someone who lied to him right like.

Speaker:

Track 1: Well not just that but also he knows he knew a lot about him before he even

Speaker:

Track 1: came there right he's he's gleaned the information from his real half.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Brother and.

Speaker:

Track 1: Read this diary but yeah i i i think i like that interpretation.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He's annoyed at himself because he's committed the ultimate sin That he committed

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the act Of socialism How Literally how.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Let's socialism say it but he this guy

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he subsidized his lifestyle he allowed.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Him to live the life he wanted he funded.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It he like at the last scene before.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He dies before he shoots him he's like give me

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: some money give me some money i have a point of that because that's the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: only time we see him asking for money right like that's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the shift like once he's decided i'm going to kill this person that's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: when we see him asking for money before that he doesn't care yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but he's he's obviously he's been he's brought him under his

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: wing you know he's allowed him

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like or maybe it's the sin of nepotism but

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he's already done that with his with his son but yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: no like i think he's annoyed at himself because yes

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he's been tricked he has been conned but he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: also like what are what are daniel

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: plainview's core values success like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it is success at all costs that's it that's all he is yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but there's a there's a ruthlessness to it again like that's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the thing like that scene where he finally realizes being

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: conned again he has this kind of vulnerable scene where

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the the brother slash con man is like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: well what are you going to do with all this money he's like oh you remember that house

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i i always wanted to live in that house i'm going to make my own house

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: on the beach you know like he's he's genuinely like he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: genuinely showing himself to this person and also

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that's what infuriates him also daniel day lewis is just

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: insane in every scene because he had that moment and i have to believe it was

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like improvised it's like if i saw that house right now i think it would make

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: me sick it's a great line what does that even mean but all i know is so much

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: oh my god it's just so awesome like a shark that that's a shark moment when.

Speaker:

Track 1: He's swimming in the ocean which is also just like a cool scene he just he like

Speaker:

Track 1: seems crazy and like it just i i think you had said at some point maybe you

Speaker:

Track 1: said this chris is at this point in the movie after he kills him or when he meets the brother,

Speaker:

Track 1: it kind of goes off the rails. I think that...

Speaker:

Track 1: Daniel Plainview is starting to unravel here.

Speaker:

Track 1: Right. He's cracking at the scenes.

Speaker:

Track 1: Like, yes, he presents himself as this businessman. He makes deals.

Speaker:

Track 1: He makes the really big deal to kind of basically to get all the wealth that he really has at the end.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I think one scene we kind of overlook, which I think, again,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is really important for his character, is when he's with the brother and he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: goes to meet, is it Standard Oil or Union Oil? Standard.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: One of the rival companies. he sits down with them

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and they're like we want we want all of this land from you and he'll give you

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a million he's like oh this bit of land i'm not really paying attention to how

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: much you want they're like 150 000 for that land okay done and then they're

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like we can he's like the the guy from the rival oil company says like i can

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: make you a millionaire right now sitting at this table,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and his response is well then what would i do with myself right

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like there's there's nothing in him except the pursuit of more land more money

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: more profit and he's like no i wouldn't do anything with myself and then the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: guy is just like well you could spend time with your son and his immediate response

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is i'll cut your fucking throat i should say yeah don't tell.

Speaker:

Track 1: Me about whether don't tell me.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: About my family how to run them but i think that's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a strange moment i don't know if it's a guy's that he's putting on because it's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like family and the caring for others you know like this is sort of going more

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: into Eli's camp about family you know I think this is just a guise for him what

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he's really saying is don't put words in my mouth don't tell me what to do,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: nobody can tell me what to do but also I think like,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that that like a massive rage reaction where

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the brother's just sitting there like a fucking puppet doing nothing like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a scared but like that massive rage reaction

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it's like they're like oh yeah we can just make you really rich now

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and you can go fucking you know play golf or whatever and and like for him that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: enlicits rage because it's like again yeah don't tell me what to fucking do

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you don't know me but also like i have nothing except this all i have is making

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: money all i have is buying more land but but i and.

Speaker:

Track 1: He's he's used to be on the he's used to being on the other side.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Of that negotiation.

Speaker:

Track 1: Where he gets to dictate the terms and he doesn't like.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Being given we were talking we were talking about this right and it's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it's a later scene but i'll if we're bringing up now i'm gonna have

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to say it right he he meets his son

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: later in the movie uh as the son has grown up

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and the son um the son says he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: going to make his own business we'll come back to it and he goes well

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that would make you my competitor yeah for

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: some reason he says it like the most badass shakespearean actor

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: ever that that's just being a british actor yeah competitor hey

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the irish are claiming him right the irish claim

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: daniel day lewis right um but yeah but

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: when he's with when he's with standard uh oil

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: these guys are his competitors and that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is like that is the thing that riles and boils

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: his blood more than anything yeah because everyone else

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is below him right yeah and you see and again you see that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this is a survival of the fittest it's sort of a social darwinism that like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that i think embodies his every movement that he makes in this in this movie

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and it's also the the thing you brought up earlier like the nietzschean thing

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like he he is the uber match like how dare you tell me what i should do with

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: my life like how dare you tell me what i'm

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: supposed to do yeah and i think yeah yeah but anyway so he then he he makes that deal,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: correct no he doesn't make the deal he refuses he refuses that deal yeah and then.

Speaker:

Track 1: We he well so i guess this is actually the

Speaker:

Track 1: a good segue then so after he murders his half big half brother he's caught

Speaker:

Track 1: by this this guy who he had was supposed to have made a deal with way earlier

Speaker:

Track 1: where he has that the great line of you know this why don't i own this like

Speaker:

Track 1: in the like the perfect I think it's like a meme too.

Speaker:

Track 1: But he now realizes to get the pipeline through this land. The only blockage, yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: The only blockage from his master plan to get all this oil is that he has to

Speaker:

Track 1: be baptized in Eli's church.

Speaker:

Track 1: And we need to talk about the – well, did I miss something?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Well, no, there's a couple of steps. The only blockage to the pipeline is that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he never bought this tract of land.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Right. But then he goes there. And it's one of the things, I think it's a really,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: really incredible way they set this up.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: So when he talks about this land he hasn't bought, he doesn't want to sell it

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to you. And he says, oh, they're trying to gouge the price. They're trying to make me pay more.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And that sets up in our mind as the viewer, it sets up like,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: oh, it's just another desert tract.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And then he goes there and it's fucking beautiful. It's like this paradise,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you know, like it's amazing. It's green. It's an orchard. It's beautiful.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And it's like, oh yeah, these guys just don't want to sell it because they just

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: love this piece of land. It's a really nice place to live.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And so then they won't sell it, but they make the deal where they say,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: if you get baptized, we'll let you take this land or we'll let you use this land.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And so that's kind of like what brings in the scene. But I think it's a really

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: interesting way, again, of that old world versus new world.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Daniel Plainview has no appreciation of beauty. He has no appreciation of...

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: They just wouldn't like they wouldn't profit off this land just because they

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like it you know i mean they can't understand that concept and i think the film

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: or like pt anderson does a really good job of setting that up for us subtly

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: though as well like yeah there's trees we haven't seen trees i think in the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: whole entire movie you know yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: It's really just desolate.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah and here and here just there's there's a good few trees it's not god the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: garden of eden but in comparison to what well that's.

Speaker:

Track 1: Where he buries uh his.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Brother his half big.

Speaker:

Track 1: Half brother is like in this like tree like.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Orchard and now we get to the point where basically we can say like everybody

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: who has been listening up to now this is the point you should have fast forwarded to all right,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i think i think this is the baptism scene i still think like that is the best

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: scene of the whole fucking movie but i think the brother subplot is it is a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: good subplot oh you guys are turning on me i don't like this no i think the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: brother subplot adds a lot to daniel playview's character i think it gives us

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a lot of his character yeah yeah oh.

Speaker:

Track 1: I see you skip that section you get right to the yeah to the baptism.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: The best thing exactly just get to the baptism yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: I i think i wrote down in my notes as like it was happening like i just wrote

Speaker:

Track 1: i just kept writing there will be bud there will be blood there will be blood.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And he said it's.

Speaker:

Track 1: Like reject the because he says reject the.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Blood right he says reject the blood i mean i don't know devon do i want do

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you want to introduce the baptism scene or should we just go straight into it.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah i said well i feel like it

Speaker:

Track 1: mostly i guess speaks for itself but it's this

Speaker:

Track 1: you can clearly see that eli's church has grown like he now has a bigger flock

Speaker:

Track 1: he has people who are sort of i don't want to say dependent upon him but rely

Speaker:

Track 1: on on this church and he's clearly a grifter i mean i think you see that later

Speaker:

Track 1: on but it seems more apparent.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He's playing to a bigger crowd he's got a bigger stage well also the physical

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: church itself right like when because the only other time we see the church

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is when that guy gets killed at the oil well like almost an hour before this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and he goes there and it's like It's a fucking shack There's like holes in the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: wall It's made out of like Shitty bits of wood,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And then you go into the baptism scene and it's pristine. It's like new sort

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of Norwegian pine or whatever.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It's like a big illuminated cross. Like it looks like a modern day megachurch almost, right?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And he's standing there in his like beautiful, clean clothes.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: At an Ikea megachurch. Yeah, exactly.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Like that's what it looks like. And he's standing there and he's like beautiful

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: clothes. It's like, but when we saw this before, it was like a shitty shack.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And now it's like this incredible church.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And yeah, I mean, again, like there's a part of like Eli's character.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And we talked about refusing to accept that he's lost if he had just accepted

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that like okay this guy's gonna build this big industry here and i have a plum

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: position as the pastor in a rich town could be a perfect life for him could

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: have been super happy but he's like no i have to be in control uh-huh it's.

Speaker:

Track 1: It's like i think you said before when you're comparing the two eli and flame

Speaker:

Track 1: view is he wants the same thing but he but you can no longer get it through the means of.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: The church.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah like maybe in like 15th century england you could have you know gotten

Speaker:

Track 1: some you know your way with the church but not in a 20th.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Century you know of course and this is this is the moment of course

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: so he's like we have a new member and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: reluctantly daniel plainview stands

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: up stands like what do you want

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: me pulled up like twice right yeah yeah and bandy the the guy who owns the tract

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that he needs is sitting beside him encouraging him to do it and this is this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is the ultimate this is the moment it's it's also a humiliation ritual right it's a human i.

Speaker:

Track 1: Literally wrote down this is a humiliation.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah yeah no totally he's the first thing he says is get on your knees that's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the first thing he says get on your knees get on your knees yeah yeah and yeah,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like he's like what do you want me to do like like he's willing to

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: do this he understands again though i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: think which you sort of see by the end of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the ritual daniel plainview understands that there

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: will be blood right and there will

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: be blood in the pursuit of his new world and here

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: in this moment we have eli saying reject the blood reject the blood reject the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: blood right um and he's on the knees and he starts slapping him in the face

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: which again that is a callback to the scene like that scene which we didn't

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: really delve into too much but like,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: When H.W. goes deaf and Eli turns up, Daniel Plague just starts slapping him

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and slapping him. He's like, where's your guard? Why didn't you save my son?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And now this is a direct revenge. We see the exact same thing.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He's just wildly slapping Daniel Plague.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah. Yeah, right. He's just slapping him wildly and screaming at him and slapping him.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And then it's probably just the best performance of an actor ever.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Daniel Day-Lewis is...

Speaker:

Track 1: They could have just...

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: So they.

Speaker:

Track 1: Could have just filmed this one scene and he would have won.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Like again because he's physically not moving he is kneeling down and not moving

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but his face just like there's an entire fucking story on his face it's incredible

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is this thing yeah like he's just in a different class yeah you know it's like i this.

Speaker:

Track 1: Is why he retired because he couldn't let it's like someone else needs to be able to win and.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah yeah just seriously this is could

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you imagine if you were an actor right and you were

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: given that like you were given that role and you were there in

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that moment yeah how well do you think you would have done i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: mean literally like it because no but i think it's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: an amazing it's an amazing story amazing script

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and it the culmination of everything and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this war as i was saying this war of words yeah like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: whose word is king in this new land and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: also and also like the the like the actual conflict you're

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: just watching on daniel day lewis's face like the actor's face

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: because he's coming in and he's like okay i'm gonna like they'll

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: pour some water on me and i'll just be like oh thanks and like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: fuck off but like then obviously eli's like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: no i'm gonna humiliate you and like the like the realized

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the moment he realizes he's gonna be humiliated then the moment he like accepts

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that he's being humiliated it's just so well fucking acted it's incredible do

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you know what's humiliating going back to the intro what i was saying when i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: was on the first my first day with my girlfriend and i was like relishing this sort of like,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this memory that i had where i was trying to emulate like daniel plays you slapping

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: your girl it's not my girl no this was at the wedding i don't even know her yet pay attention right.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And i'm pretty sure like in that bar there

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like five years ago i i think i played

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: out the whole scene i abandoned my child i abandoned my boy yeah the most like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i abandoned my child i mean outside of the milkshake line that's the most iconic

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: line yeah i've abandoned my child yeah i think that's the most iconic milkshake

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is is weird but and that's why it's so so iconic who.

Speaker:

Track 1: Says is it who says the line right after when they just says there is a there's

Speaker:

Track 1: a pipeline like it's sort of like.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He says so what happens

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is like so he goes up he gets humiliated and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he has like a real emotional reaction it's like it is like again

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the acting is so incredible like you can see this wave

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: kind of crashes over him where he kind of submits to

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the ritual and actually feels what he's feeling

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and realizes that like maybe the only time in his life

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I did something wrong but then he goes and sits back down and you can hear it

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like he sits down by um Mary Sunday the one who marries his son and she like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: gives him a big hug and he's again like he's having a big emotional reaction

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he's just like it accepts the hug and embraces her and then just in the background

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you can hear Eli again and go,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Daniel has promised us $5,000, but we haven't received it yet. Yeah.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: That's like over the intercoms. You know, it's like there's a car parked in the parking lot.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Registration, blah, blah, blah. And also, it's so incredible.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It's just so incredible.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: The whole scene is a must. There is a moment that I don't know if you caught,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like, when he, like, everybody starts cheering when the ritual is over, the baptism is over.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He goes he goes up to Eli shakes his

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: hand and says something to him which is off mic

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: yeah oh yeah you can't hear we don't know

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: what it is yeah yeah and from that moment Eli's face drops

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he realizes that like this moment this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like moment of power was an impotent moment of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: power yeah this it it was it was fleeting

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it was momentary it was false it was performative as the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: as both of those characters are they're very performative in

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: their ways and and and eli

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: thinks he just gave the best performance ever yeah and daniel at the very end

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he sort of leans into it he's like yeah like yeah i'm coming back yeah yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: yeah yeah then he comes back he says something to him eli's face drops he walks

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: into the crowd as they cheer for him yeah and he knows the pipe he has the pipeline,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: so like i think he.

Speaker:

Track 1: Says i'm gonna kill.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: You probably yeah i feel again like we've already seen him do this before right

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: we're like with paul he's like i'll get my i'll get more than my money back

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the other guys i'll come into your house at night and cut your throat like we

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: know what kind of threats he makes right and.

Speaker:

Track 1: What's another like another book ending too is right after this his son hw comes

Speaker:

Track 1: back and his son is also like slaps him a bunch of times too like Like it's

Speaker:

Track 1: this extension of the same humiliation for his.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And it's the only time that he lets someone touch him, really.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah, without reproach.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Like he gets slapped and he takes it. He takes that. And again,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I think this is the thing that's really interesting about him.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Like I said, right at the start, before we chose this episode,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I hadn't watched this movie in about 10 years.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And my memory of it was that like he's just a cruel piece of shit to his son.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But rewatching it, it's like, no, he's not. like he there is

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a complex series of feelings there and like he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: understands that his he has he has wronged his son and his son has the right

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to punish him and he kind of like just accepts it it's really there's a real

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: complexity within that like that relationship you know it's like yeah there

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is but like now i guess after the baptism scene the story sort of speeds up

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: am i correct i'm not missing any beat.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah the only scene that happens before they jump ahead in time is when he's

Speaker:

Track 1: eating with his son at the restaurant they order the steak.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah and.

Speaker:

Track 1: Then the table next to them comes in of the oil.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Execs and.

Speaker:

Track 1: They get their food first and he's like you know so pissed.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: About it yeah and again again he's because again it's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: one of those things like because those oil execs we're talking

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: about like he can't accept that he any peers he can't accept the existence of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a peer no but that oil guy is literally his peer he's another oil baron and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he comes in with all of his all of his mates all his dudes and they're sitting

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: around they're like yeah let's have some whiskey let's enjoy being rich and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: then you see Daniel Plainview and he's just like.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Furious that someone would be happier than him or furious that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: someone would be better than him this is the last time I'll bring this up

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: right this is the last time I'll bring up this Nietzschean thing right but like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that that mass morality it's sort of like it's it's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a reverence towards your it's reverence towards

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: your peers and the ability and the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: concept or the thought that you can do whatever you want to

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like lower um societally lower class people to achieve your means i think he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: makes a deal ultimately with union and union is his beard union has things he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: could not because union has the port has the port he understands union as a peer,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But he sees standard as a competitor.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah. And that he cannot under, he cannot, he cannot live with that.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah. It's like you are either below me or you are above me.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah. If you are at the same level as me, I must eradicate you.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And that's why he's got such a virile hatred.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Of this guy. Of this guy. So I wouldn't call it, even though maybe we would

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: say they're their peers, they've got more than he's got.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: In his view, they are just competitors. He could be standard. Yeah.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: You know yeah and i think that's why he reacts with he threatens them threatens

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: their lives tries to humiliate them while actually humiliating himself yeah in this sort of ritual,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you know yeah as his son watches yeah it's so pathetic well he even does that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he even does that thing where like he puts the the napkin over his face yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: so his son can't see what he's saying right that's i mean at least that's what

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i assumed he put it over so his son can't read his lips,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and then he again just does like a kind of like it's humiliating what he does

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but it's like yeah fuck off i hate you and if you if you are on his level then

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you are something to be destroyed right that's basically his view of the world and.

Speaker:

Track 1: Then so but what it's like it's a good segue like the scene with his hw as like

Speaker:

Track 1: a child still and it jumps ahead where we now see that he marries hw marries

Speaker:

Track 1: mary and then it kind of goes a little bit further ahead or like kind of just skips to.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Well 1927 right yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: 1927 in the massive massive mansion now that plainview owns.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I think like i was when i was watching that scene literally like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: earlier today it is like a kind of classic american billionaire archetype like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: what was that american billionaire in the 40s who put his piss in jars and stuff

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like that howard hughes howard hughes so it's like it's very it's very howard

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: hughes but i was also watching it it's also it's very like elon musk rolling on ketamine,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like or you know it is it is very it is

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: very like you've won right you you're the billionaire you're

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you've won you have no peers you're the top and i say well what do i do now

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i just like shoot shit in my house and get fucking hammered you know what i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: mean it's like he did he did say earlier on when he's talking to his half brother

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like that line that you said evan is just like well you're like what what was

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it say it again in your sultry voice i have.

Speaker:

Track 1: A competition in me i don't want anyone else to succeed.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Exactly and later on he like in that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: same speech he's like he he sort of dreams of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this time where he can be away from everybody

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he can be alone yeah he doesn't have to bother with him

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he sees no value in people but again he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he has in this scene and in this moment and in this time he has succeeded like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the thing about daniel plainview is he exceed he succeeds in everything he wants

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to do yeah but i think like this is one of those things right like the Billionaire's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: dream Like I feel like This is a game Everyone has played At some point The billionaire game?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: No like Everyone has played This game at some point In life It's like Oh if

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you won the lottery What would you do?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And it's like, you know, I would buy my mom a house and then I would go travel.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: That's what everybody says. Yeah, but like some of that is, oh,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I'd buy my mom a house and make sure everyone's happy in my family and then

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I would just save enough money to travel.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And then like, you look at these billionaires like Daniel Plainview,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like Howard Hughes, like Elon Musk, like that dude who fucking jacks off with

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: his son and thinks that he's going to live forever. What do you talk about? Peter Thiel.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Peter Thiel. Is this, I don't know. Yeah, the guy who like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: drinks his son's cum and says that he looks like he's 20 years old like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: literally that's what he does but like it's a thing yeah but like all of these

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i've been off the internet for like a while daniel plainview's final act is

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that it's right like and you know he's he's already introduced this to us of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like when they're like we'll just make you a millionaire right now he's like well what would i do,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you know like what would what would elon musk do when he's a trillionaire get

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: fucked up on ketamine you know like it's like well yeah like what's the point

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of accumulating all this money like literally what is the point doesn't put you in heaven.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And he just stays in his house yeah that's what we view right is like what was

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the purpose of doing this I

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: his son is gone his son fucking hates him which we see I was I was thinking

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this like going back to that sort of like social Darwinism sort of thing where

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it's like a survival of the fittest yeah,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and and Daniel Plainview is the fittest in this new capitalistic world he just

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: crushes all beneath him he gets everything he wants oh.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: There's a thing that happens in evolution, if we're going with this Darwinistic,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like metaphor and theme I'm going with, apparently. Like a dead end.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Exactly. A sort of dead end evolution. Yeah. You know, like a turtle who- Get too specific.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Builds like a shell. The shell is so strong, it keeps out all predators,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but then the turtle can't move anymore.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah. Or a bird whose plumage becomes so beautiful and vibrant that it,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like to attract mates ends up becoming like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: visible to prey it's like there's this sort of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: evolution and he sees i think

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: daniel plainview sees this himself as

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a superior evolution than to say

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: eli and this is his end point

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: his end point is he got everything he wanted he's evolved

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: past everybody he's the apex predator and now

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he's killed all his prey he's killed all his prey and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: now he is in at an evolutionary dead

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: end and this is why i was telling you before like i think you

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: cannot look at this film without looking at it as a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: direct satire of 21st century america because you

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: look at daniel plainview fucking hammered in

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: his house shooting like vases i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: mean like what am i supposed to do like what am i supposed to do

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: with myself and you cannot not see

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: elon musk like getting hammered on getting hammered on

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: ketamine and playing diablo or whatever game he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: plays right it's like all of these billionaires like yeah i killed all my competitors

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i am the apex predator what now it's all the same shit place apparently because

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like because what now like i have my son hates me my i killed my brother you

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: know like what now but you know what you know what now his final meal,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: His final meal comes knocking at the door and it's Eli.

Speaker:

Track 1: But first, do we need to say any more about his sort of like final meeting with his son?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I think so. I think so, yeah.

Speaker:

Track 1: We alluded to it earlier where he comes and he says he's going to go to Mexico.

Speaker:

Track 1: He's not going to work with him anymore.

Speaker:

Track 1: He's going to start his own business. And he says that he's a competitor.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I do have a thing which may or may not. I don't think P.T. Anderson,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: well, maybe he did intend this.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: So it's 1927, right? and his

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: hw comes up and he says i'm going to mexico to make

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: my own company daniel plainview's response is that's a mistake and that's like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you know if you don't know about mexican history that's viewed as like oh he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: just being bitter but i do know about mexican history and mexico nationalized

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: its oil in 1929 so he was actually giving him good advice it was a mistake,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: so

Speaker:

Track 1: He goes there and loses everything.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah basically i was talking about this with chris I don't know if P.T.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Anderson did that on purpose, but historically, that was really good advice.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He should not have gone to Mexico.

Speaker:

Track 1: At the same time, which is ironically too, is that when Eli shows up shortly

Speaker:

Track 1: after, he talks about how he had a bunch of investments that have now gone south.

Speaker:

Track 1: And it's like all these people around him who were in some way a competitor,

Speaker:

Track 1: Daniel's Plainview crushes them.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Well i think i i mean that's a separate

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: thing let's get on to the file scene because yeah i think like eli's return

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is very interesting because again we talked

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: about him as like he's the old world that can't realize he's done but then off

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: camera he kind of is able to succeed for a period for like 10 years right like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he turns up with his big silver chain and he's like he's like yeah i'm really

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: successful like he did succeed says that yeah he's that's.

Speaker:

Track 1: Well that's what i was going to say is it possible he's this is like a a show.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: A show of course it is i mean he he's this whole vibe

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: again he's prostrating himself he's obviously pathetic and prostrating

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: himself and yeah he could be lying but i mean like there is this degree of like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: eli never like no eli shtick was never like god like he you know it wasn't about

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: god it was about him being in power and apparently he found his niche right

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: at least for a period of time not.

Speaker:

Track 1: Just that it's a it's about he makes him say didn't he makes him repeat the same humiliation kink.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah in.

Speaker:

Track 1: Front of no one.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah say he's a false prophet yeah exactly and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that goes back to like that thing i've been saying like non-stop

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is that is like the ultimate insult for these

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: people of power or perceived power or actual power is to put words into the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: person's mouth and that's what he does he puts the word as Eli had done he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like say these words I'm going to tell you and you are going to say these words

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but also I think God is a false prophet and what what does he say God is a false prophet and,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Or God is a superstition and I am a false prophet. Yeah.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But also I think we should talk about like Daniel Plainview in that scene is

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like basically a fucking caveman.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Like as he's saying that he is just like tearing chunks of meat off the bone

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and then spitting bones onto his plate and tearing chunks of meat.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And he's like, again, he's like, I don't have to pretend what I am anymore.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I've won. Right. There's no more. There's no more cons.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: There's no more like falsehoods. I'm a predator.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I've won. i'm just like tearing and his.

Speaker:

Track 1: Shit can he's so drunk too.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah right but he's just tearing meat apart and spitting bones

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: out you know like gobbling that gallon of water is just

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: acting gold but then we've all been there like hung over to high hell and in

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the morning you just reach for like some anything of water yeah yeah like where's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: where's that like half can of coke i left yeah half can of coke but pizza i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: ordered last week and you are ungodly in that moment yeah but like.

Speaker:

Track 1: And he's also like he has like a back problem he's unable to really walk too.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah he's shaking yeah the alcohol is kicked in he has to like open his hip flask and and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he is literally sleep i mean it's a bowling alley but he's literally sleeping

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: in the gutter right like he's in the gutter yeah like he is has anybody ever

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: slept in a bathtub i don't know why i mean i have but yeah of course you have

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it's just like you're at a house party and you're like Like,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: oh, great, nobody's taking the bathtub.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And you think it's a good idea until you wake up in the morning and your whole

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: spine is reticulated into a curve.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And him lying on that bowling alley just made me think of that.

Speaker:

Track 1: I didn't specifically write down that he was sleeping in the gutter, but he's now rich.

Speaker:

Track 1: He has this massive house. He can do it. He doesn't have anything to do with

Speaker:

Track 1: it. But it's sort of like he's morally bankrupt.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But it's also he's empty, right? Empty, yeah. it goes back to that scene when

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like that guy's like I can just pay you to be retired now and he's like well

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: what would I do with myself and now we see it like what would he do with himself

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: just get fucking hammered like that's all he can do because there's nothing

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: else and there is that moment like where he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like it's very literal where he becomes a rubber stamp yeah yeah he's doing

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: his checks yeah he's doing the checks and there's like rubber seal over it like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: drawing the ink you know that's all he is now yeah he's just a signature yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he's a myth he's a legend and he's like yeah and like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And then, yeah, he destroys the only meaningful relationship that's left in

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: his life, his son. He destroys it.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And then he does confess to his son that he's not his biological son.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But only to make his son hurt.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: There's nothing like, oh, this is a confession, but I still love you.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: It's like, I want to cause you pain.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Right like and then that.

Speaker:

Track 1: When when eli says that he's sinned what do you think that he he's.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Done oh he's embraced capitalism he's embraced capital

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: right broad broad no because i mean like because we

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: see it so like eli comes in and danny de lewis is like literally again literally

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: crawling out of the gutter barely able to stand and he was like i'll make you

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a drink which goes back to that first scene where he's at the church and he's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like uh alcohol is a sin and then we see eli drink a whiskey and like grimace

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like he hates it like he hates the taste,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: as he drinks the whiskey but he's like covered in silver he's all nice now he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: says he's a radio preacher he's embraced the new world and he's like yeah god

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: has punished me for embracing capitalism basically it's like the idea he's putting

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: forward he's in debt that's what i think he.

Speaker:

Track 1: Probably invested in uh in uh.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Hw's oil company and i was fucked bitcoin like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: me but yeah you know i have 0.0000 but

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i mean again what you see is like like what you see is like these two these

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: two people who like their entire life is power control one has got all the power

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he ever wants one has lost all of his power even if he maybe got more power

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: in those 10 preceding years he's lost his power and so again he has to prostrate

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: himself in front of daniel,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and daniel is like i don't give a fuck i drink your milkshake you know like our chorus yeah there's.

Speaker:

Track 1: A line before that that i think is also really interesting i think he he brings up his brother and.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He says i broke.

Speaker:

Track 1: You i beat you it was.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Paul who.

Speaker:

Track 1: Told me about you he's the prophet.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah and.

Speaker:

Track 1: I think it's sort of like saying that like capitalism is the is is god now.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah and again because because eli is saying like i'm poor like i lost all my

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: money and he and he says to him i gave him ten thousand dollars cash and now

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: he makes five thousand a week right again like he's he's like yeah you humiliate

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: yourself you humiliate yourself for nothing my.

Speaker:

Track 1: Straw reaches across the.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Room and.

Speaker:

Track 1: Starts to drink your milkshake.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah it's so funny i think like if you watch that

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: as a clip out of context like the the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: sort of goofiness of it like it like is on the surface

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it's vaudevillian yeah but if like after

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you've watched this whole drama on like unfold like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that whole milkshake scene is like completely in

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: context but again i think again you see sanity yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and like but also you see the power dynamic right like daniel plainview does

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: not humiliate himself and he's the winner so he wouldn't but like he does not

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: humiliate himself he's like sitting there spitting bones onto his plate being

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like what do you want from me i don't give i don't care like just and And then

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Eli's like, I really need you to help me.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And he makes him like reject his faith and then chases him around the room like a little girl.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Like he's running around screaming like, ah, stop. You know what I mean? Like...

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Of course, there is that moment where he explains to him, it's like,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: what you are offering to me, you know, like, because that's the,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that's the humiliation, you know, it's like, say these things,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: renounce your God and renounce your position as a power, as a power.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And he does that. And he does that louder and louder and louder.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He makes him repeat it. And then he says very quietly and controlled.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Oh, that oil is gone. yeah you know so i slurped it up your bargaining chip

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it is a loser illusory it's gone and at that point he just starts turns shark

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: again and starts pursuing his prey yeah here's.

Speaker:

Track 1: Another thing to to the point you said before about the the uh the different

Speaker:

Track 1: industrial revolutions i think the last thing he says to eli before he maybe

Speaker:

Track 1: chases them around he says i am the third revelation.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah that was one thing that was

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: one of the things i struggled with was like like they say it so many times the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: church of the third revelation and i talked i talked about the third dutch industrial

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: revolution thing my other idea was it was like um the ten commandments jesus then capitalism,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but i couldn't really get a i couldn't really get a grasp on third revelation

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i know chris do you have something about that well yeah i was grasping

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: at something i was i was thinking about like the first revelation being at the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: beginning of the movie and like that's like the birth as I said the insemination

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: of the land and then the second revelation is the oil and then the third revelation

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: being that literally what Eli says is like God doesn't exist and I'm a false prophet,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like that that was that's the revelation yeah that's that's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that's that's the way i saw it but yeah but

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: there's just i i think again i think that's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: something up to the viewer because there's no like there's no

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: three there's no thematic three in this film

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: there's no trinity in this film not really like i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: don't like i think third revelation is up to you i would like the way i landed

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: on it was third industrial revolution but yeah also like you had you know you

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: had like moses then you had jesus then you had daniel plainview like i mean if.

Speaker:

Track 1: You look at him sort of just like as emblematic of not just like him not as

Speaker:

Track 1: an individual but as sort of the the amalgamation of just you know capital at

Speaker:

Track 1: this moment in time you know.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah they're.

Speaker:

Track 1: Just sucking up all the resources.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Well that's the thing he he pursues him he chases

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: him he is the apex predator and his final

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: act is to bludgeon him to death he he literally kills

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: god he kills god yeah you know and and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: then declares i'm finished yeah he kills god and then literally just says i'm

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: finished i'm done which is the thing i told griff which apparently or i think

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: definitely well there's nichi god is dead yeah god is dead yeah he's yeah yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but but that but i'm finished was an improvised line yeah apparently oh.

Speaker:

Track 1: After when he when he when the his his what butler is like hey.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Hey what the fuck is going on in here Is it just assumed.

Speaker:

Track 1: That he'll just like bury the.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Body? Because he can obviously see.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: He sees that there's a dead body there bleeding or a bleeding body.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And he doesn't react with any sort of shock.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: So maybe he's seen this all before. He's like, is everything okay down here?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: One of the things that like is conspicuously absent from this film,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: we haven't talked about it, but the thing is conspicuously absent is the state.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Right there's no sheriff there's no police there's no like you know like the

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: implication is he says i'm finished he just gets away with it like yeah it's like.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah i mean i think the idea is that the capitalists at this point in time really

Speaker:

Track 1: could do what they wanted.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah and that's why going way back why i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: think that the half-brother subplot should be chopped right

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is because he kills him and then he buries him why

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: does he bury him is he afraid that he will

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: be caught because because again all everything he has comes

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: from the earth he buried and like he buries him in oil

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like it's implied that he's buried in an oil pit it's a stretch

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it's a stretch no but

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like but like i like i've never seen daniel plainview

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: afraid of any sort of authority so for

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the fact that he tries to cover his tracks again i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: think sort of under like waters down his

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: character no but again because he's ashamed of the fact that he gave up to his

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: brother yeah he's ashamed of the fact he revealed himself so he must bury it's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like a cat bearing it shit in a little box you know i mean like he's ashamed

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: poorly he's a shame he's ashamed that like he gave up to this person who tricked him i like that group or.

Speaker:

Track 1: Or i mean i saw i was just looking at something and it said that their theory

Speaker:

Track 1: was that saying i am the third relation is that this is kind of what you're

Speaker:

Track 1: both saying is that god now speaks

Speaker:

Track 1: through his voice he now has like the ultimate voice the voice of god.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah i mean again i think it is i think

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like i haven't i haven't we didn't bring us before but i think like paul

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: thomas anderson like as an artistic figure if i would characterize him i would

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: say he's a satirist i think he is the greatest satirist of the united states

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i think he's an incredible and with all of his films like the master boogie

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: nights always they are satires of u.s culture and i think this this,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: This film, There Will Be Blood, also counts as a satire. And yeah,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it is a satire of like, what made the United States be the United States? He is satirizing that.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: And he's kind of showing us that, yeah, there was this original sort of underlying

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Protestant Christianity, but it got overtaken by capitalism.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: They should have stayed Catholic.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yeah.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Now we're going back, way back.

Speaker:

Track 1: So?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I would recommend the movie.

Speaker:

Track 1: Yes.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I think that's pretty clear. yeah i think i think everyone should watch this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: film yeah yeah and if you haven't.

Speaker:

Track 1: Seen it in a long time which is probably a lot of people you know i think i know.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Including me like like i said i hadn't watched it about 10 years and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i remembered it as being like a pretty basic morality tale so

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: when i re-watched it i was blown away by how good it

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: actually was you know normally normally i twist

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: this question which you didn't ask but is it's like how many times a year should

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: you watch this or how many times in your lifetime should you watch this i think

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: we did um children of men you should watch that every three years every couple

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: years there'll be more years that was the first movie.

Speaker:

Track 1: I watched this year i.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Watched there you go and was it more relevant than it was last year it will

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: yes it's gonna be to the point where.

Speaker:

Track 1: You watch it and you're just like literally seeing the things happen out.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah it just is reality how often should you watch gold an eye once once once

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a life what no at least gold line was not a good movie it was how many times

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: should you watch emilia perez if you can never watch it once and then.

Speaker:

Track 1: Gouge your eyes.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah just don't watch it and how many times

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: should you watch uh there will be blood i would

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: i mean i would say give there will be blood space because i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: think it is okay it is it is a real like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: it is a real intelligent artistic satire

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and i think like i'm gonna go with satire i think paul thomas is a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: satirist this is not a funny film

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but it is satirical and i think it's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: something that like it really has a lot

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: to say about like the modern u.s culture like i

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: didn't mention this but like i think daniel plainview as a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: as a sort of idol as a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: character he is what maga people

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: want trump to be right he is this he is this self-made bootstraps billionaire

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: who turned the desert into profit he is what MAGA people want Trump to be right

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: like I think there's a this this says this film says a lot about the USA but.

Speaker:

Track 1: Before we do go since I did mention that you are a podcast do you have any podcast

Speaker:

Track 1: news you want to share with the good listeners.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: No you do it so yeah we We're a podcast that works on a very limited schedule.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: We put a lot into episodes.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: But as this one comes out, we'll be releasing our third season where we are

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: specifically going to start talking about Captain Morgan.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: So if you've ever drunk that rum...

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Come listen to our podcast and find out how he is the worst war criminal of

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the 16th century. Because he is.

Speaker:

Track 1: I haven't had that out. I haven't had him in Captain Morgan in a long time.

Speaker:

Track 1: So maybe I'll keep that away.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I stopped drinking Captain Morgan when the spiced version became ubiquitous.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I remember when there used to be black Captain Morgan. Yeah,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: black rum was great. Yeah, I was okay with that. And then it became spiced.

Speaker:

Track 1: Do they have Gosling rum where you are? Have you heard that?

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: What the fuck is that? Ryan Gosling rum?

Speaker:

Track 1: Gosling. it does sound like right it's it's like a dark room.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: No no we don't have that but i haven't had.

Speaker:

Track 1: It in a long time the only reason i know about it is because a friend of mine

Speaker:

Track 1: from college his family's friend was like the founder of it like he like literally

Speaker:

Track 1: like yeah it's it's weird i remember meeting him at his wedding it was like mr gosling meeting.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: This guy i was like this is well no evan i haven't had your friends roll well we don't really talk.

Speaker:

Track 1: Anymore so i.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Rare enough but now i would say let's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: boo as this episode comes out we're going to try and

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: line up captain morgan part one we've got three episodes of captain morgan yeah

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: and basically he's one of the biggest bastards who's ever lived in history he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: is a nazi level war criminal and we've got a full we've got a full three episodes

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: covering him so if you thought we were funny go listen to our episode do.

Speaker:

Track 1: You drink captain morgan's while.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Obliterating we had a whole talk about this episode one I said I was gonna buy

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: some but then I remembered it tasted like fucking shit so I just bought some better it's not good rum,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: yeah I think every time we convened to do one of the episodes we're just like

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: oh shit we should have got some rum for this but we're not that well organized,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but I will tell you here's a little a little if you're thinking maybe but not I'm not sure,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: one of captain morgan's war crimes was that he castrated so many spaniards he

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: made a christmas tree out of spanish genitals jesus christ there you go if you

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: want to find if you want to find out more come listen to our episodes as this

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: topic is dealt with a deft touch.

Speaker:

Track 1: Excellent well uh chris and griff we uh we didn't at the end of the episode

Speaker:

Track 1: talk about other movies but we'll do that uh separately.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Yeah offline yeah i mean yeah unless you want to just continue hanging out but

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: the listeners don't get to hear this part it'd.

Speaker:

Track 1: Be interesting to do another paul thomas anderson movie perhaps.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: I mean boogie nights is incredible the master's the master's great for the fact

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: that i haven't actually seen like the thing is i i have a memory of seeing a

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: couple of scenes from boogie nights i remember thinking the master was good

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: but maybe i fell asleep sounds like a yp way sounds like a boogie night is.

Speaker:

Track 1: Great i just watched it about a year ago it's really good.

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: Well like yeah like so but you know i already asked you could we watch the new

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: one and you said no so chris i'm just gonna say that's a wipe that's a yp that's

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: a your problem that's a your problem it's a boogie nice reference for anyone who got it,

Speaker:

Bring out your dead: well i didn't because i haven't seen it well.

Speaker:

Track 1: There will be something in the future with uh chris and griff but uh you've

Speaker:

Track 1: been listening to left of the projector and you can find this podcast where

Speaker:
